Already announced for the Fiesta, in an interesting move Ford has decided to skip the Focus and Fusion models and go with the Mustang platform as the latest recipient of the innovative connectivity technology. The Mustang will also be the first Blue Oval vehicle to offer AppLink with the standard SYNC interface, as well as have it integrated into the optional Voice-Activated Navigation System, allowing users to also input commands via an 8-inch touchscreen display.
While 2011 Ford Fiesta owners are able to download AppLink from Ford’s SyncMyRide website, on the 2012 Ford Mustang it comes as factory-installed content.
If you missed our previous story, the new AppLink feature is pitched as a "safe, convenient" way to access smartphone apps from behind the wheel. Essentially, it eliminates the need to actually hold and operate your phone as you drive.
Unfortunately, it still only works on Blackberry and Android smartphones--iPhone users are left out in the cold until new hardware updates necessary to interface with Apple's rather closed handset are implemented later this year.
