Citroën, part of French auto giant PSA Group, has revealed a radical sedan concept it plans to formerly unveil in late September at the 2016 Paris auto show.

The concept is called the Cxperience and gives a glimpse of some of the design elements we can expect on the next-generation C5. It can also be seen as a modern CX, as the Cxperience name suggests.

At 190 inches in length, the Cxperience is roughly the same size as the current C5 that has been on sale since 2007.

The two vehicles have nothing else in common, though, as the Cxperience features a thoroughly modern design as well as a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The exterior design has been inspired by modern architecture while the interior is all about comfort, with its light and airy feel plus its plush, lounge-like seats. The single-spoke steering wheel gives a nod to the brand's history and the floating dashboard is a horizontal design with a three-dimensional appearance featuring a sculpted, tubular cut-out flowing in a single piece from the right rear door to the left rear door.

The powertrain of the Cxperience concept combines a small gasoline engine with an electric motor and has a peak output of about 272 horsepower. The gas engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and drives the front wheels, while the electric motor drives the rear wheels helping to create a “through-the-road” hybrid all-wheel-drive system. A 13.0-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery provides about 37 miles of electric range.

It wouldn’t be a modern concept without the latest in connectivity and in this area the Cxperience doesn’t disappoint. The infotainment system features a 19-inch touchscreen that provides the driver with access to a number of connected services, for example restaurant booking or monitoring the home. The screen also groups all the onboard functions such as air-conditioning, driving aids, navigation and media sources. A smartphone (for those up front) and tablet (for those in the rear) can also be integrated to provide additional means of control.
