Phil Hill, American racing legend, dies at 81

The first American ever to win the Formula One world championship, Phil Hill, died today in a Monterey, California hospital of respiratory failure. The racing champ took the Formula One title in 1961. Pictured above is Hill driving his 1962 Ferrari 156 F1 car on the Nurburgring.

Other racing feats to his credit include three wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, an equal number at the 12 Hours of Sebring, plus three Grand Prix wins - two at Italy and one at Belgium. Hill was always proudest of his Formula One championship, however, according to friend and fellow American racing driver Dan Gurney, reports Automotive News.

Hill had been struggling with Parkinson's disease, and the illness led to complications with his breathing, and subsequently his death. He was 81 years old.

Godspeed is what you can say to someone like that.

Right now he is in his favorite car, on his favorite track, kicking everyone's collective a**... :)

Thos guys had real b***s, when you think of just how risky racing was back then. Today you have a much, much better chance of walking away from huge crashes, back then you had a much higher chance of burning to death than you did of living past 40...

I met Phil Hill five years ago on my first trip to the historics in Monterey. I had three event posters with me that he offered to sign, if I didnt mind waiting as having parkinsons had slowed him down some what. A true gentleman which can not be said for Moss sat next to him who signed them begrudgingly then Dan Gurney who aplolgized for Moss's poor attitude and who also signed my posters with no problem and like Phil acted in a way you'd expect your racing hero to....

My deepest sympathy to his family as he was one of those people that when you met them in person he more than filled your expectaion of what you thought they would be.
