Touaregs' a 10 !!!
Source: Edmunds

...I switched from a 1994 Supra TT into the Touareg and have no regrets.
The milage is only 3 mpg less than the Supra TT, so I'm used to low milage!
This truck is very nimble around town, and solid on the highway.
I've been off- road in the Carolinas, light stuff (haven't needed my ltd rear diff yet), but the Touareg is indifferent to what you throw at it. It does everything well...

So disappointed I traded it in within a month
Source: Edmunds

...I am a 4-time VW owner (Fox, old Jetta, new Jetta, Touareg), so I was eager for a reasonably priced wagon that gets great fuel economy.
The vehicle was not fully explained to me at the dealership and I never would have bought it if it had been.
The transmission is so incredibly jerky and when the car shifts gears, you actually jerk along with it.
The brakes are so tight that they are shockingly sudden.
I never had this before in my VWs. The seats are so uncomfortable that I feel like I am sitting on rocks, which could have been less expensive.
I have needed to see a...

My nicest VW to date
Source: Edmunds

...Its fuel economy has been around 16+ mpg, as advertised. For a 5,300 pound vehicle, I cannot complain. It has massive power, sticky cornering on all its season tires, a great 6 speed tiptronic transmission, and all of the creature comforts that I have never known in a Volkswagen. The best ownership factor is not seeing one every mile on the road, like the Ford Explorer, BMW X5, etc. Always get the "high five" from other VW drivers. I just easily handled 10+ inches of fresh snowfall on back roads of the Eastern Shore of VA. I was the last vehicle into my community before the roads were deemed...

And they make the gas version because...

...Traded in a 2006 Expedition for this midsize SUV and we aren't looking back.
The Touareg is just the right size for our family of 5 (kids range 3- 9yrs.).
It doesn't have the interior space of the Expedition, but it's not a big lumbering beast either.
This is a fun to drive SUV with plenty of power at a great price point.
Early results on mpg indicates it should more than cover the EPA ratings.
My only hope is that we didn't get one of the unreliable ones. I only rated reliability "5" because we haven't had the car long enough to rate...

Super SUV
Source: Edmunds

...I've been an Audi owner for years, but opted for the VW this go 'round because I didn't care for the Q7 exterior and I liked the air suspension option on the Touareg.
It is by far my favorite automobile to date! Even though I got a fully loaded edition, there are a few luxury items noticeably absent (no memory feature on the driver's seat?
!). And it is not without its electronic bugs: the alarm goes off sometimes when locking the vehicle with the key fob or exterior keyless button...it is a VW after all.
But, honestly, it is one fine vehicle and if all goes well beyond these...

2008 VW Touareg- V6 (Highline)
Source: Cars.com

..."I've driven my Touareg in almost every imaginable road conditions, never to be let down by its performance.
In fact I've even been on roads during winter conditions so bad the snow removal trucks were not even on the road.
There were actually some pretty scary moments when I'm sure that a North American made vehicle would have been in the ditch!
At these moments the Touareg's computer assisted control mechanisms took over and saved me and my family from certain disaster.I am a very experienced,
professional driver having spent many hours behind the wheel of many different...

better than cayenne
Source: Edmunds

...Puts a smile on my face everytime I get in it, especially at night.
Sold a 2004 v8 cayenne loaded to buy this. Maybe the only vehicle available that has a center and rear differential and can operate in 22" of water.
The key to this suv is, that like a Porsche, it has true dual air in and out. Quieter than cayenne and exterior looks better...

VW Gets an "F" in Customer Service - LEMON
Source: Edmunds

...I purchased a '04 Touareg in 12/03 for $49,365. Finally two months ago, 28,420 miles later, Id had enough and dumped it for a $26,865 loss.
During the time that I owned it, it spent 46 days in for repairs,
everything from trim/buttons falling off to major problems, too many to mention I had to make countless trips back to dealer due to parts unavailability.
I made countless calls to VW of North America trying to get it recalled under the lemon law.
VW couldn't care less and pacified me by repeatedly saying: "We'll continue to service your vehicle as outlined under the...

VW TRIES TO COMPETE WITH THE BIG GUYS(V-8)
Source: MSN Autos

...Cons: I AM FED-UP WITH VW, I KNOW I KNOW ITS ONLY THE FIRST YEAR THEY CAME OUT WITH THIS BUT THEY SHOULD STAND BEHIND THERE PRODUCT! I HAVE HAD AN OCCASION OF BALD TIRES... THE CONTINENTAL SPORT CONTACTS, THEY WERE BALD AT 10,000 MILES! MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP IN MILWAUKEE REPLACED THE FRONT 2 AND SAID THE BACK 2 WERE OVER INFLATED, AND COULD NOT BE REPLACED. ANOTHER ITEM ON THE TOUAREG IS THAT VW WILL NOT BE ABLE TO COMPETE IN THE NEW DIRECTION OF LUXURY WITH THE NEW PHEATOM AND TOUAREG IF THEY ARE GOING AT THE RATE THEY ARE WITH ELECTRONICS, MY GAGES ARE GOING OF LIKE CRAZY ALL THE TIME WITH...

2004 Volkswagen Touareg
Source: Edmunds

...I special ordered my Volkswagen Touareg to get all options except navigation.
I have towed 7,500 lbs. from Florida to Michigan no problem!
I also have done some serious off roading in Michigan's state preserves and found out that the Touareg will out Jeep a Jeep.
It even feels good at high speeds. At 80 - 85 mph it returns 16mpg.
Having to perform maintenance every 10,000 miles is salty but well done.
the new tires that I put on it at 30,000 miles improved the ride and handling beyond belief. I am so happy with my total VW experience that we bought 2006 Jetta TDI from...

Why should I also consider these?

If your needs involve more passenger-hauling than off-roading, you'll probably be better off with one of the many more carlike crossover vehicles, as the Touareg can feel especially heavy and cumbersome with no reward in terms of interior space.

The Acura MDX and Lexus RX are both better options for passenger comfort; they feel roomier inside and handle well, though their appointments might not seem quite as exclusive.

The Audi Q7, which is related to the Touareg, has an available third-row seat and a beautiful, more expansive interior; it doesn’t have such a focus on off-road ability, so it handles a bit better on the road.

The X5 and MDX are the best choices of this group for those who want an SUV that feels frisky and agile.

But if you plan to off-road or tow in luxury, the Touareg is one of the best SUVs for its size.

The Mercedes-Benz M-Class has off-road and towing ability but outdoes the Touareg with a more spacious, more passenger-friendly interior, however.

2011 BMW X5
The 2011 BMW X5 offers impressive handling and features, but lacks the styling and interior that makes competitors pop, while the X5 M offers nearly sports car levels of performance with all the utility of a standard X5.

2010 Acura MDX
The 2010 Acura MDX still finds ways to improve—though the new grille, steering feel, and USB/Bluetooth omissions are out of character.

2010 Audi Q7
The 2010 Audi Q7 tames the SUV bad-boy image with subtler looks, diesel fuel economy, and good on-road performance.

2010 Mercedes-Benz M Class
Though it's far from cheap, the 2010 Mercedes-Benz M-Class earns our kudos with hip styling riffs, shock-and-awe AMG power, and your choice of earth-saving powertrains.
