German Engineering = Defective engineering
Source: Cars.com

...If you follow up on VW notices you will see that VW eventually went back to only replacing bad one since they depleted the entire stock of coils. Bad design but no recall. To replace the left front light bulb you have to remove the battery - if VW does this it is over $100 - to change a bulb! At 88K the timing belt went and this has an interference engine so that is $4k min to repair. Oh did I mention that you are suppose to replace at 105K per the manual! Once again do searches and you will see the 1.8T in VW & Audi's have major prolbems in this area. Bad design and a company that does not...

New Beetle- Holds up well & Fun to Drive, but get a warranty
Source: Edmunds

...I've had my Beetle Convertible for over 4.5 years and have been overall happy with the car. It is a compact convertible. Don't expect a big trunk or having tall people in the back seat...

Loved it but got rid of it FAST!

...!) b/c some "pin" broke inside of it. Couldn't lock the car until service was done. Then one rainy night, the tailgate latch busted and the trunk popped open and set the alarm off in the middle of the night while I was trying to sleep. Couldn't set lock/alarm or close hatch until service repaired latch. Front latch (cheap plastic) busted when I was trying to open engine bay. THEN latch on glove cpmpartment busted in the middle of me driving and glove compartment door just popped open on its own as I drove. Lastly the paint started fading. Repaint okay but you could tell. SOLD it after 9 mos...

Fun to drive - Great economy!
Source: Cars.com

..."This is such a fun car to drive -- zippy as can be.
As with most VWs, the plasticky interior is a bit
cheap and shoddy - the dash is stupidly put- together (top dash panel clips broke during an AC/fan repair and are tough to replace) and the fabric on the ceiling is falling off.
Even all the plastic molding and covers in the engine compartment are, in my opinion, unnecessary. Mechanically, the car is fabulous. I love it!"...

Most Unreliable Car EVER
Source: Cars.com

..."I've had it for a year and a half, and the car has been out of commission for repairs over half that time.Pieces keep falling off the car (like the headlights while I was driving down the road,
etc).VERY EXPENSIVE to get repaired. My car was having the problem that it would die while you driving down the street (surface, freeway, highway, long or short trip).
It took me several thousand dollars and 6 mechanics to figure out what was wrong
!So far I have had to replace almost the entire engine after a year, and it is again having problems!
I bought a car for $400 once that...

Turbo "S"
Source: Cars.com

..."In one month I'll have owned this car for seven years, and it has been super.
Runs great in all seasons, climbs mountain highways with ease, handles and rides very nice for a smaller car.
And it still averages about 30 mpg (mostly city driving) with the original factory performance upgrades."...

I regret ever wanting this car
Source: Cars.com

...Finally after I put 12,000 miles on it, a bearing spun in the engine (yes, i bought it used). Mind you, I did an oil change every 6months, like they suggest. I never reached the 5,000 miles before I had an oil change. Don't get me wrong I loved this car with all I had in me. Now I just feel drained by it. I am still struggling to get it fixed but will probably sell "as-is" with no enigne. It is hard to find the engine that goes in this car because there are so many people trying to replace their engines, and they are not cheap!!!"...

Top Replacement Cost
Source: Cars.com

..."If you're thinking about buying a new or used Beetle, one thing to consider would be the cost of the canopy replacement.
VW will replace a canvas top for approximately 4,100 dollars (I didn't even ask for an estimate on a leather top
!). Even an after-market canvas replaced by a shop other than VW can run about 2,600+. Be informed before you purchase. Hope this helps."...

Fun car to drive, has it's quirks
Source: Cars.com

..."I have the 2003 GLX. The turbo is a blast to drive, and the matching leather interior is great.
The car has it's quirks, mostly dealing with the lights on the car.
One of the rear brake lights keeps going out, even after replacing the needed brake switch with the improved one.
I've replaced a headlight and turn signal as well. As far as problems go, these are minor to deal with. The traction control does well in ice and snow, and the sound system is good too."...
