3300 mile UpdateSource: Edmunds
...I have the cloth standard seat which are very comfortable but several threads are ripping already after only 3300 miles. |

The peppy gas guzzlerSource: MSN Autos...Looks good Cons: 5 cyl engine fuel economy, made in Mexico, no hybrid option. Overall: I'm a college graduate and majored as an automotive technician, so I went with this vehicle. This is a great car but I wonder why Volkswagen went wtih a 5 clyinder instead of a 4? If you have a heavy foot don't expect to get good gas milege because the 5 cylinder is bad at higher rpm. They should have just made the 2.5l a 4 cyl instead. It gets the gas milege of a v6 sedan. Also this car is made in Mexico since they don't have any plants in the U.S, so I question the long term reliability even though I know... |

TDI Guy and his Sippin' SaverSource: MSN Autos...Always qulaity! Cons: Color choices. Black interior cloth or leather-extremely hot in FLA. BUT-the seats seem like they resist water. But not dog hair! Very low to the ground. Overall: The gas mileage so far is 48 mpg! I was told by VW owners who have had previous model year TDI's that they can get up to 55 or 60 mpg depending upon the driving situation. After the motor breaks in it becomes more efficient and runs like a top. Fantastic little efficient pocket rocket! The wave of the future is technology we've had for over 70 years. It will take too long to get hydrogen up to par for civilian... |

..."I loved to drive this car. Steering, clutch, and ride felt great. |

Fantastic sport hatchbackSource: MSN Autos...The vehicle has been very reliable, with only a couple repairs required in the 140,000 miles it has been driven: speedo cable replacement, starter and alternator rebuild, valve lifter replacement, and regular wear items. It has never left me stranded, and I don't see myselft trading it in anytime soon. Cons: The automatic seat belts were a bit annoying at first, but now I'm used to them. The oil filter is a pain to change. It's got a few rattles now, but it's almost 14 years old. That's about it. Overall: Reliable, fun, performance hatchback. It's easy to see why these have been so popular... |

The Orginal Pocket Rocket.Source: CarGurus...One of the best traits of the vehicle is its 1.8T engine which has been awarded Ward's 10 best engines in previous years. This engine pulls strong from Idle to 5500RPM, output is 180HP and 173lbs ft of torque. This engine pushes passengers in back of their seats. It's that good. It also returns excellent gas mileage for a turbo engine. Mid 20s MPG. Nevertheless, the GTI does have some downfalls which include numerous electrical problems, mostly radio and working around the engine bay is very tight, resulting in scraps and cuts around fingers and hands. It also looks like a GOLF. There are no... |

VW beat 'em outSource: Edmunds...It was the funnest to drive and had the best ride from my perspective. With traveling almost 90 miles a day, I was looking for Blue Tooth, Cruise and smooth ride. The Mazda was definitely very close and the Toyota was there too (too many recalls). The steering is pretty good. There is some road noise but you hardly feel the bumps. Also there is some hesitation however when in sport with the 6-spd tiptronic you hardly notice it. I drove the Jetta as well, but the ride from my perspective was better in the Golf. Great car. The 2 door was exceptional also... |

...Pros: The parts for this car are super cheap and everything is relatively easy to repair- which is a plus because it needs a lot. |

On fuel economy alone, the 2010 Volkswagen Golf/TDI makes a strong case to compact-car buyers.
There are many engaging competitors, though.
The Honda Civic is a perennial favorite here, though its latest design isn't a favorite.
The Hybrid version has TDI-trumping fuel economy.
The latest Ford Focus matches the Golf with two body styles, and buyers tend to be attracted to its powerful SYNC entertainment system, but it's styled poorly.
The Mazda3 is the perennial favorite for handling, but it can't match the VW's solid feel, even after a full redesign this year that thoroughly upgrades the interior.
