Problematic
Source: Edmunds

...After falling in love with this convertible in the '80s, I dreamed of owning one.
That dream has turned into a nightmare. Within the first 5 months, I had the Cabrio in and out of the dealership with a defective part that kept causing the car not to start.
Then one morning in bumper-to-bumper traffic a wheel came off.
This could have caused death or serious injury if I had been driving the speed limit.
Now the transmission has just caused me to be stranded and returned to the dealership.
These problems have all happened under 24K miles. The warranty runs out very...

Cute and fun, but a few design flaws

..."I acquired this car when it was 11 years old with 80K miles. I prefer small cars and have found the Cabrio to perform very well for its size...

worst car i ever owned

...fromthe get gothe convertible was the wrong color that I ordered but hey I can live with that. The fuel intake to fill the car up will not let you put gas in any faster than EXTREMELY SLOWthings in the interir keep falling off and or breakingthe cruise control went, the heated seats don't work neither do the heated mirrors, the drivers window has a mind of it's own.as for service at the dealership, Well how many timesshould I have to take it back for the Exact same thing.I quess I now know why they stopped making these cars."...

SOMETIMES I GO TOPLESS!
Source: Edmunds

...I just absolutely love my car! I cant believe they even described it as sluggish.
When I first purchased the vehicle, I was worried it wouldnt hold up to the speed my Acura Integra offered, but my little Cabrio definetley has some serious pep.
Dropping the top (going topless) makes driving a whole new experience. This is my first convertible and let me tell you, once you go topless you never go back!...

Should never have discontinued this car!

..."Ran out and bought a new cabrio when I heard they were going to stop making them in 2002.
Best decision of my life. Never had any problems at all, great gas mileage, and even though it is a small car, thought it had great trunk space.
The heated seats paired with the convertible made many fun drives in cool November weather! Volkswagon made a terrible decision to stop manufacturing this car!"...

Simply marvelous

..."The 1996 Cabrio is my first car. Put simply, I adore it.
As for durability, three people have learned stick shift on the 5-speed manual model. It is all but indestructible. I would recommend it heartily to anyone wanting to learn stick shift...

Worst Car Ever
Source: Cars.com

..."I bought this car used but it was only 2 years old with 30,000 miles.
It worked fine for about 6 months then the problems started and never stopped.
Pretty much anything and everything imaginable broke on the car.
In true VW fashion, the repairs were not cheap. This car is cute and fun but it ends there. I would not recommend this car to anyone!"...

Not a bad car for the price
Source: Edmunds

...The Cabrio is one of the best deals you can get on a convertible.
There are lots of things they could improve, but overall it's a pretty good car.
It's very solid; you don't feel like you're driving a tin can down the road.
You get an okay amount of power in the manual transmission version, though this car could NEVER be classified as sporty. You can also fit in any parking space that exists...

Fun, Practical, Unique

...Have had this Cabrio since new and only had problems with window regulators - fixed under warranty. Really enjoy the solid top in all kinds of weather. Have had two of these and both have been great...

I LOVE MY CABRIO!!!
Source: Edmunds

...What an awesome little car! This baby is lots of fun, great to drive and eye- catching cute!
If you want one, get it now, because this is your last chance (it's being discontinued in favor of a beetle convertible)!...
