Deferred gratifcation

...This is not for hard-core sports car fans. It is a car that strikes a balance of performance, luxury and styling. With the hardtop up, entry can be a little awkward, but once settled in, the seats are fantastic and the instruments and controls are well laid out. Top down driving is a joy and the motor music is sublime. If you can live with the small trunk and your "boy-racer" days are in the rear view mirror this should be on your short list of "fun cars!" Buying suggestions: the vast majority of these early SLKs were sold in the U.S. with manumatic transmissions. They will be easier to find...

...Pros: Very quick and a head turner, this car has more power than you need...when the supercharger kicks in it throws you back in your seat and the front end lifts wow
!!!! Cons: I am 5 foot 11 inches tall and a bit on the heavy side lol...
but I get in and out quite easlily, It could use a bit more shoulder room, I f you are over 6 feet tall thid wold probably be very cramped.
Overall: got this car which was kept in a heated garage for each winter and never seen an ounce of road salt very clean,
with 22,000 miles for 30,000 dollars, now it stays in my garage until spring...

..."Wow! If you want to have the fun of your life and turn heads doing it, get an SLK.
Top down, airscarf up flying down the road at speeds you shouldnt be in one of the best looking cars on the road is one of the best feeling you can have in a car.
I like the styling and performance, and its fun to have people rolling down there windows at stop light saying nice car."...

SLK300 = Miles of smiles!
Source: Cars.com

..."I have wanted one of these ever since they came out in 1998...
So I asked the guy above and saved my money and waited.
Bought the car in January 2011 and drove it home, and have not regretted it.
the car is solid, safe, fast as I need. This vehicle gets 23-28 in town (18-24 on snow) and 30-34 mpg at 65 with the a/c on arctic on the highway.
The performance is fast and sophisticated - if you want a sledgehammer buy the SLK55 AMG!...

Classy Enjoyable Unique

..."The SLK 350 is a unique performance oriented sports car often overlooked.
The engine is very smooth and has lots of power; it's very reliable and is used in the entire MB line of cars.
The automatic transmission offers Comfort and Sport modes (adaptive learning of the driver's style) as well as tiptronic manual selection of the desired gear...

..."Voted one of the top 25 most reliable autos sold in the US in the past 25 years.
Designed by Bruno Sacco at M.Benz and has evolved into a work of art. I get 28 MPG around town and some repairs are cheaper than my Honda...

Actually is worth waht they advertise
Source: Cars.com

..."This has been a wonderful automobile. It is so well designed that the interior of the doors never get dirty from the road dust or even wet from rain or washing.
Even the engine compartment stays pristine. Beyond that however, is the great running engine with smooth performance.
It handles well and you can decide if you want it in regular or sport mode. The retractable top is marvelous."...

Why should I also consider these?

Luxury convertibles are a mixed lot.

Some have hardtops, some are ragtops.

Some seat four (on paper, at least) and some are two-seaters.

The SLK's competition hits it from all these angles.

The BMW Z4 is right in its wheelhouse, and if anything, it's a little more evocative in its styling and its balanced performance.

The Porsche Boxster--and the hardtop Cayman version--are brilliant mid-engine performers with the steering and chassis dynamics of cars twice as expensive, and they're among our top choices in the segment.

For left-field alternatives, we'd look at the Infiniti G37 Convertible, a folding-hardtop affair with luxurious fittings and good, if not great, performance.

And reaching upward in price, there's always the suave Jaguar XK convertible, a pavement-rippling performer as a base coupe or convertible, or a throaty growler in supercharged XKR form.

2012 BMW Z4
The 2012 BMW Z4 is a great option for the driver seeking a balance of fun and comfort, making it a great light tourer, but it can quickly become expensive with added options.

2012 Infiniti G37 Convertible
The Infiniti G37 Convertible doesn't suffer the usual styling compromises, but it's a little less exciting to drive than its Coupe cousin.

2012 Jaguar XK
How to tell if you're hopeless, when it comes to cars: take your pulse after looking at or driving the 2012 Jaguar XK.

2012 Porsche Boxster
Stylish, fun, and capable, the 2012 Porsche Boxster is one of the best roadsters around.

2012 Porsche Cayman
The 2012 Porsche Cayman is a potent mix of performance, comfort, and cargo space, and a leader in the sports car segment.
