Better than okay... not excellent!Source: Edmunds...This car doesn't feel as light, or as peppy from what I remember. The only other rotary car I drove was an old MX2, right hand drive imported by a service man and traded through a local dealership. he had bought two, and had to sell one to pay for the EPA expenses to end up with one car. It was hot... this car is not so hot. Not nearly enough torque. Features are nice, variable speed/temp redline is pretty kewl, and rev-limiters in general, also kewl. if you're going to have a hot car you should drive it hard... and this car really isn't all that "hot". I'm not "sorry" I bought... |

It's a love, hate relationshipSource: Edmunds...I have only had problems since. If your RX-8 is not idling correctly, you need to have the engine replaced. Finally after 2 years of problems, mine are about to be solved. If you are looking to buy this car, please know that it is not a grocery getter. You have to heat the engine completely up before you can turn it off. Do yourself a HUGE favor and do some research. You would be amazed at what needs to be done for the upkeep of this car. I love mine to the point that I cant trade it in. Make sure you are willing to put in the time and effort to keep it up... |

For the empty nesterSource: Edmunds...The four doors were the selling point since we have an Old English Sheep Dog who loves rides... Unfortunately the dog can only sit in the front seat which means she stays home when my wife and I hit the road... That said, there is ample space for grandkids and adults for short trips... Handling is great and the automatic performs flawlessly. Not as fast as a 6 speed but then I am not into racing. Fit and finish is good and seats comfortable on long trips. There is a little more road noise than I would like but you can still hear the Zoom Zoom!... |

Outstanding sport/family car!!!Source: Edmunds...All other cars we looked at were all the same. Line any brand, make or model up on a football field, and they're all the same 'boxy' car. I bought this one for her because of style, then engine, then performance. GAS MILEAGE? You've got to understand this engine. Due to its rotary nature, it all boils down to a 6- cylinder, 2-stroke engine. Typically, 2-stroke engines have never had much power until you reach a speed above city street speed, and fuel consumption matches. You can drive this car at 80 MPH in 3rd gear (yes, auto also) all day with no problems. Never slides, squeals or tilts much... |
On, off, on, off--it's not a light switch, it's Mazda's program for its next rotary engine. While speaking about commitment to the history and soul of the company out of one... October 11, 2011 by Nelson Ireson 2

If you're looking for alternatives to the RX-8, you won't find any other models that provide the same combination of responsiveness, backseat space, and an affordable price.
The BMW M Coupe and Porsche Cayman are sportscars that provide very impressive performance, but neither of them quite has the sharp, connected go-kart-like handling of the RX-8; however, both the BMW and the Porsche have torquey, powerful six-cylinder engines that are easier to live with.
The edgy Honda R2000 roadster has a feel on the road that's comparable in some ways to that of the Mazda RX-8, with crisp handling and a peaky, high-revving engine, but the RX-8 has a quiet enough cabin for occasional road trips—and a backseat for occasional extra passengers.
