Highway mpg is 18.5 not 23 as the EPA estimate indicates
Source: MSN Autos

...Tilt wheel is poorly designed and could cause loss of control if adjusted while driving. Doesn't hold the road very well under windy conditions. Body roll and instability can cause tense moments during emergency steer. Felt like it was going to roll over. Sun visors doesn't block the sun on the edge by side post. Overall: I test drove this vehicle from Wichita, KS to Kansas City, KS and back. Total of 6 hours and close to 475 miles. The mpg on the highway is close to that of a GMC Yukon which gets 16.5 on the highway. I wouldn't recommend buying this "SUV" unless you are looking for a cheap...

...Pros: Easy-to-clean plastic in rear cargo area, Back seats fold completely flat,
Roof racks, Leather seating, Sound system, Heated seats, Power Moonroof Cons: Lack of power seats, Slow accelleration Overall: I've had my Tucson for 3 months and I love it!
The accelleration is a little sluggish, but I can deal with that.
It is very comfortable for long distance travel. I like that it is professional looking for business trips, but is also great for ski and camping trips.
I highly recommend the ski racks and cargo tray to protect the back. Overall this is a great vehicle...

Tucson ROCKS
Source: MSN Autos

...Great on gas, everyone just loves it, and they where completely surprise as they doubt it would have been any good, being a Hyundai Product, well they where all surprised, my family and friends. One of my friends purchase the elentra 2007, and she loves it! Hyundai'a Quality is exceeding the american companys and is now tied with Honda! Keep it up Hyundai!! Cons: none Overall: I recommend this SUV, its cheaper and more quiet then the Toyota RAV4, my buddy works at Toyota and he maked the RAV4 and said the Tucson is so much quieter, rides very smooth and the engine you can't tell its even...

Poor fuel mileage
Source: MSN Autos

...Happy with the overal looks. Cons: SO very disappointed with the mpg. We are not getting anything like it supposed to. Drive 2 miles to work, and 2 miles back. Weekly average is 12.7 mpg. THis is not good. Overall: We are not happy with the fuel mileage. WE certainly could have done better with many other vehicles. Too many people are complaining about the poor fuel mileage. Hyundai should look into this or change the estimated mpg on the stickers. 12.7 is far below their lowest figure. and this is not hot rodding, plain simplle driving...

Why should I also consider these?

Several years ago, the Tucson was one of the only models in its class to offer standard side airbags and electronic stability control, but over the past several years, other brands are offering them and they're no longer the differentiator.

The Tucson is beginning to look a little outdated in its design, and the new Honda CR-V stands out as an especially strong competitor, with top safety results, a refined powertrain, and a comfortable, roomy interior.

The Escape, though a dated design, has been recently refreshed.

If you're looking for a vehicle that feels sportier, the Subaru Forester is a good alternative--it sits a bit lower and handles more crisply--as is the Mitsubishi Outlander.

One advantage the Tucson holds over most of the competition is that its AWD system has a locking center differential, making it less likely to get stuck on muddy inclines or mixed-traction situations.

Finally, there's also the Kia Sportage, which is closely related to the Tucson but has slightly more distinctive, rugged styling.

Both the 2008 Hyundai Tucson and the Sportage offer an excellent warranty, with 10 years or 100,000 miles of powertrain coverage.

2009 Ford Escape
Though it looks decidedly old-school, the Ford Escape is a solid and stylish five-passenger, compact SUV that has been kept up-to-date.

2009 Subaru Forester
It’s significantly improved this year, but the 2009 Subaru Forester remains a unique all-wheel-drive crossover with less power and fewer features, but better carlike handling, than its competition.

2008 Honda CR-V
The 2008 Honda CR-V doesn't have hip style or performance on tap, but it has the security, utility, and frugality that many sensible moms want.

2008 Kia Sportage
If you can live without top-level refinement and the absolutely latest technology, 2008 Kia Sportage is a fine little SUV, and considering its price, a genuine value.

2008 Mitsubishi Outlander
Though the first-generation Outlander was often overlooked, the updated 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander has emerged as a well-rounded vehicle--and one of the sportiest-driving small crossovers.
