Drive One.....Awesome.
Source: Edmunds

...First, congrats to Ford for "not one dime!" As a taxpayer, I appreciate it; hence, my recent purchase.
I've had my 2011 Explorer about 2 weeks and it has lived up to my expectations: - smooth,
controlled drive - responsive handling - secure turns (sticks to the road,
not top-heavy) - upscale, roomy & very comfortable interior - high-tech,
hands-free MFT is a delight - sleek, sporty exterior w/classy dual-panel moonroof - great MPG for its class (17 city) - offers about every perk you can imagine - favorite feature: "bootie cooler"!

MySync killing a great SUV....
Source: Edmunds

...From the start we had multiple issues with the MySync system. As I write this review, the Explorer is yet again in the dealer for repair. We've already had to take it back three times. This time the car over heated due to a cooling fan that shorted out. Making the issue worse, though, was the fact that after the car over heated, the MySync system crashed. We've had two updates to the software and we are still experiencing issues with the phone, climate, navigation and audio. We had iSync in our previous 2008 Edge (IT WORKED FLAWLESSLY). Somebody rushed MySync out the door. It's ruining the...

I made a mistake..!
Source: Cars.com

..."The Ford Explorer is a great looking SUV...however, it has much to be desired.
The interior is also very appealing. I have the AWD Limited model...it has a shake in the front end on acceleration.
It lacks a tilt steering wheel and I hate the permanent tilt of the wheel.
Now the worst part...The My Ford Touch system continuously locks up, which makes the radio and climate controls unusable.
I have to disconnect the battery to make it work (as advised by the dealer sales personnel). This is unacceptable for a new $50k+ vehicle."...

Technologic Nightmare
Source: Cars.com

..."i'm in a bad place, I want to love this my Explorer, but the MyTouch system is so unstable, and yields the car unusable so often, it makes me angry.
Handsfree phone mic is horrible, nobody can understand me when I make calls.
Backup camera sticks on for as much as 10 miles down the road, which means no nave, radio, etc.
Nav system never finds addresses or businesses, but services tab does, but 1/3of the time my phone won't pair so no services.
Been thru several software updates, nada. Have to stop writing, I'm getting mad again!"...

2011 Explorer Already In the Shop
Source: Edmunds

...Our 2011 Explorer Limited is already in the shop with less than 1,000 miles on it.
The entire MyTouch system that controls the climate control, stereo system, bluetooth, navigation and rear back up camera crashed.
This is our second explorer and we also have an F-150 and I am very disappointed with the 2011 Explorer.
The gas mileage improvements are not true. The best mileage I have been able to get is 16 mpg on the highway.
The car does not have the power I expected and the 'luxury' features of the Ford MyTouch were not worth the 50K price tag, especially since they don't...

Just Awesome!!!

...After driving a BMW for the past 12 years, I am extremely please with the new 2011 Ford Explorer.
Detroit (Ford) has finally caught up with the Japanese and German auto manufacturer. It drives like a luxury sedan and the limited option has all the bells and whistles that you ever wanted...

Let me count the problems
Source: Edmunds

...Needless to say, with the current performace of my 2011 Explorer, this will be the last Ford I own. That being said, here are the issues: 1) Transmission slips in first-I almost plowed through the back of the garage last week. 2) Overheating 3) Sync system: a) Bluetooth errors b) Nav slow to react c) system reboots when driving d) radio stays on after car is turned off e) time is wrong f) destination history is wiped out 4) Right rear window is loose..how that got past quality control is beyond me. 5) dashboard noise update to come...

5 stars for me
Source: Edmunds

...I bought this explorer awhile ago and put a lot of miles on it.
I have never had a problem with it at all. I always get the regular oil changes, brakes etc.
I have had Chryslers and gm vehicles that are completely worthless but so far with all of the Ford products I have purchased, I have been very lucky.
This Explorer is great for everything from handling to pulling.
Maybe some of the others out there may have been a bad batch or something.
So far so good. All 5 Fords that I have owned I have taken over 100,000 miles with no problems at all and I hope this explorer...

New 16 year old car.
Source: MSN Autos

...Pros: We bought the Explorer New and my wife still loves it, so much she hasn't wanted to replace it.
I have offered to buy a high end replacement. No dice so far. Cons: It is 16 years old. Overall: Has been a great car with minor repairs...

Why should I also consider these?

The Explorer isn't the only SUV to cross the crossover Rubicon.

It could be argued that the Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee are crossovers, since they're going to be driven primarily on pavement.

Both are brand-new this year, and they're fantastic efforts, with better off-road ability than the Explorer, if a touch less avant garde inside.

The Honda Pilot used to be the best crossover on the market, but the new version has a plasticky interior and over-the-top SUV styling that detracts from its driving feel.

The GMC Acadia is a bit narrower inside than the Explorer, and lacks the high-tech onslaught, but it's still a fine crossover with a tasteful balance of sport-ute looks and capabilities.

2011 Dodge Durango
The 2011 Dodge Durango is the anti-crossover, especially with the HEMI and R/T trim, and if the world still sanctioned big SUVs for small families, the Durango would be elbowing its way to driveways everywhere.

2011 GMC Acadia
The 2010 GMC Acadia strikes a good balance: more useful than full-size SUVs for passenger duty, yet a lot better-looking than a minivan.

2011 Honda Pilot
If you can get past the garish grille and overwrought look, the 2011 Honda Pilot is a fine family vehicle, with minivan-like interior space and decent performance.

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee
The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is one capable, good-looking crossover—and a welcome sign of life from Chrysler.
