2011 Explorer problems
Source: Edmunds

...I have brought the car in 3 times so far for "software update" because the clock can't keep time accurately.
Today after a routine oil change( the first) I was told that I had a leak in some hose or part that would take TWO WEEKS to get because it is backordered. Very disappointed in this car...

Solid Truck I Could Depend On
Source: Cars.com

...The interior blows any 95 competitors away, Beautiful beige leather interior with a 2 tone (beige and black) dashboard and centre console looks luxurious and sophisticated. A lot of storage space throughout and roomy. I didn't have the 3rd row of seats so the trunk was large. Fold the rear seats down and you've got a flat surface where 2 adults could sleep. The fuel consumption was pretty good for an SUV. It ranged from 11.2L (21 MPG) on the highway (summer) to abt 15.5L (15 MPG) in the city (winter). Usually I averaged between 11.7L - 13.8L (17-20 MPG) It was a very reliable vehicle with no...

...I just love my SUV. I find it fun to drive (I must I have I've had it since third week in January 2011 and I already have 10,000 miles on it.

Nice ride
Source: Edmunds

...Never let us down. As a result of this we decided to stay in the ford family. We priced the explorer loaded and the mercury mountaineer loaded. Much to our suprise the truck was about $2,000 less. It was a no brainer we went with the mountaineer. Overall the truck is quite an improvement over the 03 explorer, rides great, more comfortable, just nice all around. The only draw back is the fuel mileage. It could be better. With the explorer we got spoiled after I changed the fluids to full synthetic. With the explorer we got about 15 town, 23 highway. the Merc gets 11 town 18 highway...

..."This is my second Ford Explorer. Ford has out done its self.
Not only can this car transport the family but it is cable of bringing 6 large men and excessories to the tailgate party!
Plenty of room! This vehicle is reliable and fun to drive. The V6 gives you enough performance when you need it."...

2011 Ford Explorer XLT 4WD
Source: Edmunds

...Bought my Explorer in April to replace our 2008 Toyota Highlander.
The Explorer is a major upgrade. We have driven over 10,000 miles including an across country trip this summer.
The Explorer is much nicer to drive than the Toyota.
Much better handling, and the manual mode on the transmission was great driving through mountains.
Gas mileage is generally 19-20 mpg in our normal mixed driving. But we were getting up to 27 mpg on our vacation. We have not had any mechanical problems - perfect for my family of 5...

Why should I also consider these?

The Explorer isn't the only SUV to cross the crossover Rubicon.

It could be argued that the Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee are crossovers, since they're going to be driven primarily on pavement.

Both are brand-new this year, and they're fantastic efforts, with better off-road ability than the Explorer, if a touch less avant garde inside.

The Honda Pilot used to be the best crossover on the market, but the new version has a plasticky interior and over-the-top SUV styling that detracts from its driving feel.

The GMC Acadia is a bit narrower inside than the Explorer, and lacks the high-tech onslaught, but it's still a fine crossover with a tasteful balance of sport-ute looks and capabilities.

2011 Dodge Durango
The 2011 Dodge Durango is the anti-crossover, especially with the HEMI and R/T trim, and if the world still sanctioned big SUVs for small families, the Durango would be elbowing its way to driveways everywhere.

2011 GMC Acadia
The 2010 GMC Acadia strikes a good balance: more useful than full-size SUVs for passenger duty, yet a lot better-looking than a minivan.

2011 Honda Pilot
If you can get past the garish grille and overwrought look, the 2011 Honda Pilot is a fine family vehicle, with minivan-like interior space and decent performance.

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee
The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is one capable, good-looking crossover—and a welcome sign of life from Chrysler.
