One of my favorite cars
Source: Edmunds

...I have the Sport edition 740iL. The car is phenomenal.
Unbelievably roomy interior, great styling, and despite its size, it still handles nimbly like a much smaller car.
Easy to understand and well-laid out controls. The throttle response is very linear and predictable, and it has an amazingly tight turning radius.
It takes a licking and keeps on ticking. Mine was hit twice in the rear and once in the front (before I bought it), and after being repaired- you couldn't tell.
It still handled and drove great. I love this car.
I bought an S65 Mercedes to replace it, but I...

First Car, Great Car
Source: Cars.com

...She then gave the car to my brother who drove it for about 2 years before my mom got a new car. Her old car went to my brother and the Blue 1991 Volvo 740 Wagon went to me my junior year of high school. 60,000 miles, 3 sets of hubcaps, and a college degree later, ole blue is still kickin'. Sure I get made fun of, But hey, I get decent mileage, I can pack just about anything into it and it has a sweet hand crank sunroof! Plus the only major repairs have been replacing the fuel pump and getting a new radiator. I'll probably be selling my in the near future as I need a small truck to assist in...

Interior Design Needs Major Improvement
Source: Edmunds

...It is fast, comfortable, sleek and a pleasure to drive. However, the interior design has been a huge disappointment. The little space that was already in the earlier 7's is gone. The only item you can place at the dash now is a pen let alone the only place my phone can sit is the cup holder. For a business man, this inconvenience makes day-to-day travel to meetings a hassle. So much to the effect where I have even considered that when my lease ends switching to another make who has planned the interior with more practicality...

Driving Machine

...I have over 120000 miles on this car and will have it til I die. No major problems. Fuel economy lacks, but other than that this car is built to last...

Neglected as can be but was a great car
Source: Edmunds

...This was my fourth Volvo an my first outside the 200 series, I bought it for only 900 and very neglected so I expected a lot of issues, especially at 364,000 miles.
I replaced a blown turbo an tires as well as the normal Volvo tie rods,
beyond that this was a fantastic car always suprisingly fast always got me where I needed to go up until almost 500,000 miles when I had an oil leak I didn't notice until too late.
Was one of the most exciting cars I ever had the pleasure of owning...

Best Car I've Owned
Source: Cars.com

..."I purchased this car used in 2004 and have driven it for the last 5 years.
I have never enjoyed a car more. The luxury features of the 740iL are unparalleled,
the large seating space in front and rear are phenomenal, and the performance is unbelievable for a car that appears to be all luxury.
Only downside is the expense of maintaining a BMW (everything costs more!)."...

200K and still going
Source: Edmunds

...I just hit 200k a few days ago! The leather seats had a few stitches come loose, had a few plastic moldings crack in the interior but other than normal wear and tear, the car is outstanding.
I don't doubt that this car will last me 'til I hit 400k miles!...

2009 7-series impression
Source: Edmunds

...The current car is masculine and sleek, on the outside and quite comfortable in the inside. I like the heads up display and the lane change indicator. The car is powerful and responsive in the BMW tradition. I noticed that the dash was covered with a light color leather and it reflected onto the windshield. This is dangerous. I also noticed a wind noise at the driver's window. This is something my current 750iL does not have. I was not impressed with a $1000 guzzler tax and a drop in gas mileage. This was poor planning...

Simply Amazing
Source: Edmunds

...This is the first BMW I've ever bought. Before I had all Japanese sports cars that were very nice.
When I was shopping around for the 740, I knew that these cars are expensive and known to have issues.
Bought mine w/ 100k miles from original owner with all service records.
After 2k miles, the alternator failed. Paid $400 for a rebuild one directly from Bosch and fixed it myself.
It is true that this car is expensive to maintain but if you work on it yourself (thanks to e38.org writeups), you will save a lot of money.
The bottom line is that this car is simply amazing...

Second 750iL proves same as first one
Source: Edmunds

...My 1st, a '99 bought @ 51Kmi & totaled @ 105Kmi, not a horrible crash by any stretch, major damage under the car was the problem. Current vehicle bought @ 41Kmi now @ 53Kmi. Nothing but batteries so far but the oil service light just came on so I am prepared for at least a grand for the soon to be scheduled service by BMW (Break My Wallet). Will probably do the plugs (12). If you can't afford a few grand/yr. in service, this is not the car for you. Sway links & thrust rod bushings will be covered. Extended warranty for 48Kmi/48 mos. cost $4,100 & if you own these cars, you had best get a top...

Why should I also consider these?

The BMW 7-Series has long duked it out with the Mercedes S-Class for Germany's top honors.

The current S-Class is less visually appealing than this new Bimmer, though the S-Class does come in AMG-gone-wild editions.

The Audi A8 is an aluminum-framed car with more conservative looks but a surprisingly nimble feel; it's offered in short- and long-wheelbase versions, as are the Jaguar XJ and Lexus LS.

The Lexus LS 460 also gets a long-wheelbase hybrid companion, the LS 600h.
