I think I got luckySource: Cars.com...I test drove several new and used 5 series but at the end of the day I wanted more of the e38. There are a few issues with this model that you must address to ensure trouble free operation. Common parts that you will replace are bushings, hoses, radiator, ball joints and struts. These things are considered standard maintenance that will ensure long life and performance. You can improve and/or customize the e38 to suit your style as there are many aftermarket parts available. If you find a nice one you will be rewarded with an excellent driving machine. Very happy and highly recommended."... |

Great Fun!Source: Cars.com...The older models of the 5 series have great styling and still have great performance. Bothe my 540i's had abut 100,000 miles on them and still held their looks and funstionality. Everything still works. I like the rear window sun screen and the rain sensor wipers (on my 2000). The 6-speed manual transmissions were in good shape and felt better aftr a lube job. The 4.4 liter v-8 in these cars is notorious for oil leaks. Both of mine needed head cover and timing cover gasket work. I have done all the engine work on my 1999 myself (with the help of a good brother-inlaw and good service manuals)... |

The chief competitor to the 2010 BMW 5-Series's sedan is the Mercedes E-Class, and the Audi A6 Avant is the Sports Wagon's closest rival.
The E-Class has more of an emphasis on comfort than the 5, with a roomier-feeling interior and a softer ride.
The Avant only comes with the 255-horsepower, 3.2-liter V-6 engine, not the larger, 350-horsepower V-8 available on the sedan.
As with the Sports Wagon, all-wheel drive is standard, though the Avant has a slightly softer ride, and its handling isn't as sharp as that of the 5-Series, nor does it offer such advanced technology features.
The Cadillac STS brings plenty of high-tech options and respectable performance, but it doesn't have the prestige of the 5-Series.
The Saab 9-5 SportCombi is now a quite dated design.
It comes with front-wheel drive and turbocharged four-cylinder power, and its powertrains aren't as refined as those of the other rivals, but it's packaged well, with excellent seats, plenty of headroom, and more useful cargo space.
There's also the Infiniti M35 and M45, which bring brisk performance and some rival high-tech features such as a lane-departure system, but their cabins aren't as quiet and refined as those of the 5-Series models.
