The special edition model will be a lighter and more powerful version of the current 8C Competizione, and will be available in both coupe and convertible variants, reports Automotive News. GTA, which stands for Gran Turismo Alleggerita (Italian for a lighter grand tourer), is the name Alfa Romeo uses for its special edition performance models and is also expected to appear on a lightened version of the new Mi.to hatch.
Original: At the launch of the new Mi.To hatch this week, Alfa Romeo CEO Luca de Meo revealed details about a new a special edition 8C Competizione being considered to celebrate the carmaker’s centenary in 2010. The new car would be a lighter and more powerful version of the current 8C coupe, similar to Lamborghini’s Superleggera version of the Gallardo.
Speaking with AutoTelegraaf, de Meo stressed that the plan is yet to be given the green light from Fiat. If production were to be given the go-ahead, a power hike to the 8C Competizione's already impressive 450hp (336kW) would certainly be on the agenda.
While de Meo is still unsure about whether the car will ever go into production, if it does he is adamant that it will be a limited edition, restricted to around 100 units and carrying the famed ‘GTA’ badging to display its extra potency.
Meanwhile, things are getting busy for Alfa as the carmaker ramps up to start production of the 8C Competizione Spyder early next year. While production runs for both the coupe and the convertible have long sold out, de Meo was insistent that Alfa would not try to cash in on the demand and that no additional models would be built. However, that doesn’t mean there won’t be limited runs of special edition models such as this possible 8C Competizione GTA.
