GM took the wraps off its Chevrolet Cobalt SS performance coupe at last year’s SEMA Auto Show in Las Vegas and now the carmaker has released an image of its sedan sibling, which will go sale several months after the coupe in the middle of the year. The 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt SS Sedan will feature the same ‘SS’ badging and 2.0L direct-injection, turbocharged four-cylinder engine as the coupe and should carry a similar price tag as well (the coupe starts at $22,995).

The fuel-efficient engine also appears in the Pontiac Solstice GXP and Saturn Sky Red Line models, and delivers a healthy 260hp and 352Nm (260lb-ft) of torque. Performance levels should be similar to the coupe, which means a 0-60mph time of about 5.7 seconds.

The coupe version recently set a Nürburgring lap record for a FWD car, posting a time of 8 min 22 seconds (beating the previous record by 13 seconds), and we suspect the new sedan will do the same.

I wonder how they test this thing on Nürburgring, they stop the timer every time they
have to stop and let the brakes cool, before those completely melt?

    Good engine, I hear.
I think they use it in the Ariel Atom that’s sold in this country as well.

But I’d agree, the car looks very ho-hum…
