First test drive of the Tesla electric roadster

The lucky guys over at Popular Mechanics were handed the keys to one of the development mules for the exciting new Tesla Roadster. Once sitting behind the wheel, the driver immediately notices as they turn the key that there’s something very different residing under the pretty sheet metal. Instead of the rumble of a high-powered internal combustion sports car engine, you’re greeted with a faint “click” that tells you you’re ready to go.

Floor the pedal and you’re off with a rush of silent, but instant torque. The claim of 0-60mph in just 4 seconds seems extremely plausible though they driver couldn’t test it. The vehicle is always at the peak of its power band, always ready for a squirt of acceleration. The only downside? Silent power means other road noises are amplified. Chassis squeaking bumps and rattles, other cars alongside you. Still, it’s all fun and remember, you’re doing your part at saving the planet.

The performance is excellent. And the looks as well, it's an upgraded Lotus Elise after all.
We just have to wait for those batteries to get cheaper...
