Unique Performance files for bankruptcy

Unique Performance, the Texas-based muscle car manufacturer accused of ‘title washing,’ has shutdown operations and filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. This comes just ten days after Dallas police were forced to investigate the operations following several complaints from customers.

During the raid, police seized 61 cars in various stages of construction, some of which allegedly had improper or illegible Vehicle Identification Numbers, reports Automotive News. Unique is believed to have been salvaging old wrecks by retitling them in another state, restoring them, and then selling them to unknowing customers in a process known as ‘title washing.’

Authorities believe Unique Performance’s debts could be as high as $100 million. Creditors include several customers, many of whom have placed deposits ranging from $100,000 to $250,000, as well as Carroll Shelby Licensing and Foose Design.

Carroll Shelby Licensing allowed Unique to produce its Shelby GT350SRs and GT500E “Eleanors” (pictured), while Foose licensed them to produce the Foose Mustang Stallion, Camaro, Challenger and Foose Motorcycle.

No arrests have been made but police are still investigating whether to charge employees, including owner Doug Hasty.
