VW: We want to beat Toyota in profit

Volkswagen Group’s new boss has made the bold claim that he wants the brand to become better than Toyota in the profit stakes. CEO Martin Winterkorn made the statement during an interview with German newspaper Süddeutschen Zeitung, where he also mentioned that there’ll be no more job cuts for the German giant.

During the same interview, Winterkorn also outlined VW’s plans to launch several new models in addition to its existing lineup, including a new compact car and a replacement for the VW Fox that’s due in the next two years.

Beyond that, Winterkorn wants to have a product for every high-volume segment in the market including a range of hybrid vehicles as well as modern diesels. The first hybrid drivetrains from VW should appear in the new Polo and Golf range.

VW beating Toyota at profit? That would be really hard to do...

Because Toyota is run by accountants and their entire car lineup reads: make money no matter how ugly/bland, underpowered and soul-less car is :)

Which is where a company that charges more for the same product, but one that's better designed can succeed. Let's face it, in most parts of the world VW is considered a 'better' brand than Toyota. Maybe not more reliable, but less cheap.
