In a move designed to appease green-minded investors, Ford has pledged to reduce its new-vehicle greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2020 at the latest for both the U.S. and Europe. Ford believes promoting itself as environmentally responsible will attract customers, mimicking the strategy Toyota has successfully employed with its hybrid fleet.
The announcement is also in line with an agreement between Ford and several shareholder groups with green agendas, the biggest of which is the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility - an investor group representing almost 300 religious institutional investors and managing more than $100 billion.
The investment group has also announced they want GM to follow Ford’s lead and set its own targets, reports Bloomberg.
Activists groups like Friends of the Earth call the new targets “unimpressive,” explaining that the 30% target only matches “existing regulatory requirements.” Remember, Ford is already mandated to lift its fleet average fuel economy levels to 35mpg by the same 2020 cutoff date in the U.S. and will face new 120g/km CO2 limits in Europe in coming years.

prob not, ford might struggle in the upcoming years i can only see GM as the lone surviving american brand but if they are able to pull it off it would be the biggest upset since the U.S beat the soviets in 1980
delby clearly hasnt seen ford’s international offerings, which they plan on bringing here, or atleast that level of investment. wizards; if you want ford to make cars that are BETTER than honda and toyota, just give it till next year. they already tied them this year. Yeah i know that was a report done by ford, but I expect JDPower to show the same.
gus, you’re right but this article is speaking the truth, ford’s just promissing that they will comply with what is required by them. however, I look forward to the day that the base mustang comes with a turbo 4, and the GT is a turbo 6 or turbo small 8.
I’m looking forward to an electric Mustang, with quick-charge batteries, 350 mile range, and the acceleration of a Murcielago…
But a nice 3 liter V8 turbo with over 300 horsepower and 300 torques making 35mpg when driving gently would be lots of fun until then…
chris - i cannot believe a word of any report that comes out of the USA stating that build quality etc for american cars is equal or better than their european or Japanese counterparts. It is clearly a biased opinion and is more thna likely funded by the USA auto insutry to perk up interest in local products. If Chrysler / GM / Ford where to ever go under then the US woudl be tetering on the edge of a recession due to the lack of locally generated income.
Dont get me wrong in regards to Fords international products and GMs for that matter, but the best both marques have are coming out of Australia with the Commodore and the Falcon, and Europe with the Mondeo, Focus and Astra.
The Locally produced products are not up to scratch on a global scale and the only reason they still sell is becuase of the ingrained belif in american society that bying local is the best way to go !
