Subaru has finally taken the wraps off its new Impreza WRX STI ahead of its world debut at the Tokyo Motor Show at the end of the month. The car is developed from the current Impreza hatch but picks up shortened front and rear overhangs, a longer wheelbase and widened body flares. Integrated into its front bumper is a pair of fog lights with chrome accents and side vents feeding cold air to the car’s brakes.

Under the hood resides a heavily revised version of Subaru’s venerable 2.0L boxer engine, fed by a twin-scroll turbocharger and mated to a six-speed manual gearbox only. No official details have been released for the output figures but information leaked from a brochure reveals the new STI will likely develop up to 304hp and 311lb-ft of torque.

Drive will be sent to all four-wheels via Subaru’s symmetrical AWD system and the new multi-mode Drivers Control Center Differential (DCCD), Subaru Intelligent Driver (SI-Drive) and Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC).

It really is a sad day when a car this great has to look that bad. The previous Impreza may have had some mass appeal issues but that was no reason to make it fit in with all the Corolla’s and Civic’s of the world. Why not improve the interior and leave the exterior? Why ruin something so wonderful? Oh well, it was bound to happen some time, it seems to happen to most cars these days anyways.

look.. i’ve said it before, i’ll say it again.. the STi has always been a rally car for the road.. so in a way its surprising that it stayed a sedan as long as it has..

the problem isn’t that one of the most iconic rally cars ever has sold out and gone hatch (possibly) after the hot-hatch craze. the problem is with subaru’s new design language, and the fact that instead of giving up on a design language that has been around for several years now (a design language that very few people really like) and starting over with a new language on the STi and bringing it to the rest of the range later on, they just made an even better rally car and put it under the skin of an Outback.

it could be worse though.. it could look like the tribeca.

Look at it this way… in a way this is the best STi ever.. because they’ve gone and outdone themselves yet again. the car is probably a million times better mechanically.. and just like all the STi’s before it, is even uglier than the one it replaces.

Gus, I agree with you.. not only do i personally think its the best looking STi yet, it actually looks better than a lot of hatches. Its almost as nice as the euro-spec focus. its smooth and aerodynamic while still keeping some sharp rough edges.. and apparently keeping some ugly battle scars on the face LMAO
