Wagons and crossovers accounted for almost half of Volvo’s sales in the U.S. last year, so it comes as little surprise the carmaker will be adding even more of these models to its lineup in the near future. With the all-new XC60 crossover set to make its debut in Geneva next month Volvo has finally dropped the staid boxy design of its past models and has instead adopted a much sportier and sleeker look.

As predicted the production car’s styling remains true to the concept version (pictured below) unveiled at last year’s Detroit Auto Show, featuring the same S-shaped LED taillights, swooping headlights and sleek profile. In keeping with a lifestyle theme, the XC60 also features a much more car-like ride height and is devoid of any serious underbody protection.

Powertrain options include two turbodiesel engines and a new petrol unit. The diesels include a 163hp unit and a 185hp mill. The petrol engine is the most powerful motor in the lineup, developing a peak output of 285hp. Next year Volvo will also add a 2.4L diesel engine that develops 163hp and emits just 170g of CO2 per km.

The new XC60 will go on sale towards the end of the year as a 2009 model where it will have to compete against formidable rivals like the BMW X3 and Land Rover Freelander/LR2 plus the upcoming Mercedes-Benz and Audi Q5. Production will be handled by the carmaker’s factory in Ghent, Belgium, and officials are expecting to sell up to 67,000 units per year.

Wonder if this is based on the platform for CX7, the rising shoulder and glass area reminds me of that car

such a shame, i think! i work for bmw, but the XC60 concept def caught my eye at the previous auto show… all of the new styling that made this vehicle so cool seem to have been dropped– i really wish they’d stayed even truer to the original concept!!! i’m not a big ford fan, believe me, but i do prefer their “kinetic” look in europe– the concept seemed to have improved on that even further (while stealing the original foglight surround from OUR bmw CS…)… most of all, it was that rugged metal protector-thingy-ma-jig that made the front end of the concept… and the way the rear exhaust was seemlessly integrated into the rear metal protector-thingy-ma-jig… why’d they drop those design elements???

OMG! I’m absolutely speechless… Volvo has ruined every cool aspect of the XC60 concept. I can’t believe my eyes. Such a disappointment. Everyone I know liked the concept - it was fresh, desirable, distinct. This compared to concept is NOTHING.

Sad day for me (as I was actually thinking, that around time when I’ll change my car, the XC60 would be a candidate No1).

I still hope this is some kind of mistake or fake rendering… :( ((

P.s. - it’s not bad, not bad at all. But… Why make us crazy with gorgeous concept, rise expectations - and then ruin it all?????????

Its too bad they changed the rear and front of the concept. They ruined the design completely. Being in the market for this size SUV I would have waited for it (maybe, prefer the upcoming Q5) but with this design its not worth it. It’s an ugly looking SUV now.

Oh, no! Just when Volvo was becoming a standout in design with their XC60 Concept, the production model becomes a plain Jane. I just lost interest.

PS Where is the touch screen console?

I think the XC60 remains beautiful.

    What about the diesel engines? I’d guess they’ll be the 180hp 2.4L straight-5 and the 140hp 2.0L straight-4.

Alan, the CX-7 uses the CD3 platform, the same as the Fusion, MKZ, Milan, Edge and MKX. The XC60 uses the EUCD one, like the Freelander, Galaxy, S-Max, Mondeo and S80/V70. But if it did, I’d seriously doubt the shoulders and glass area were the same.

Ya! I agree with the majority here, the show car was awesome, was really considering buying one if they didn’t screw it up. Well they screwed it up, its ok, but bland compared to the exterior show car. What a shame. Guess i’ll be buying something else. :(

Nice! These manufacturers rarely stay true to the concepts that brought so much much on the show circuit. This is however the space that Infiniti should have entered with their EX - long roomy awd wagon/crossover.
