Updated with new spy shots of the Cadillac SRX.
Spy shots of Cadillac’s future midsize SUV emerged and now images of its Saab cousin, the upcoming 9-4X, have surfaced as well. Both cars are built around a heavily revised version of GM’s Theta platform although their styling will differ significantly. Comparing the images, the Saab prototype clearly has a different A-pillar to the Cadillac and the faint outline of a traditional Saab grille can be seen through the camouflage.
According to the Saab prototype’s registration details, it’s a running a 284hp (209kW) petrol V6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox. It’s also fitted with 255mm tires on 18in wheels, measures in at 495cm in length and 192cm across, and tips the scales at a hefty 2,180kg.
No further details have been released about the Cadillac model but recent reports claim the new model could keep the SRX name, and be available with either a 210hp (157kW) 2.8L V6 or a 300hp (224kW) 3.6L V6.
The new SRX will be targeted at premium compact SUV and crossover models such as the Land Rover Freelander (LR2) and BMW X3 and could be fitted with diesel and hybrid powertrains in addition to a regular petrol lineup.
These latest spy shots give us a clue as to what the new car’s profile will look like, and its general proportions. However, there’s also a revealing interior shot, showing a neat centre console with signature Cadillac layout for the controls and vertical air vents.
GM has also confirmed that the SRX will spawn a sister model for Saab based on the 9-4X concept car from January’s Detroit Auto Show. Also, both vehicles will be built a plant in Mexico starting early next year.

Caddy decided to use the SRX name on this thing.
I thought so too.
Awesome! Now hopefully the powers that be at Ford are watching and can learn that if you stick with a styling theme that it will turn your luxury division around, a novel idea!
P.S. I never thought I would say this before the age of 65 “I want to own a Cadillac, NOW!”
The powers at Ford have nothing that can compete. Lincoln basically has been moved to fight Buick, not Caddy.
And what is Buick? image wise that is!
There is quite a bit to the heritage at Lincoln than meets the eye and all they do is screw it up. A modern day twist on Art Deco with both luxo barge cruisers and a performance based halo car all styled around the same theme would be awesome! Oh wait a minute thats what Cadillac has done to make the brand successful…..
Once again Ford will be on the scrap heap.
So caddy is going back to FWD?
Kevin, their cars will be rwd, but for bigger SUV type vehiles a car based fwd alllows it to have better milage, plus it will have optional awd like the competition, plus the CTS wagon will give you all the space of the CUV with rwd.
MyWheelsOnWalls.com, the upcoming LaCrosse replcment and the rwd Luceerne will prove you wrong about Buick. By the way Caddy is working hard on the 3 series fighter and STS/DTS replacment to show that they are more then just a CTS brand.
I know GM is working hard I think its fantastic how they are absolutely taking the fight to the Germans and making huge strides in doing so. What angers me is Fords abilitly to stand there and watch Lincoln just quite simply fall apart.
As for Buick I do see it (believe it or not). The best thing GM did for Buick was kill off Oldsmobile. Also Buicks current cross over looks fantastic (name escapes me right now) especially in the Bronze/Brown metallic color. I would consider buying one if rumor proves true that the Mazda 6 wagon is done in the U.S. (my wifes current ride).
So why the beef with the domestics? Their arrogance towards what they think sells just amazes me. Also the imports make it seem easy and it most likely is, if you the manufacturer have the ability to read the market place and produce what the market place has given you to proverbally read.
At the end of the day it is refreshing to see that GM is clearly getting the message and it shows in their product, hence my potential upcoming purchase. I just wish Ford would follow suit!
MWOW, you’re thinking of the enclave. I’m surprised to see you considering an enclave to replace a 6 wagon. interesting choice. but i guess if you want something “mid sized” with a hatchback thing going on…… but why not the CX-7? same platform as the 6, and it will ride on revised underpinnings as soon as the new 6’s mechanicals hit the streets.. plus.. its not HUGE.. my god that enclave is big. and yes, I agree.. lincoln should move upmarket. start now, by importing euro fords and rebadging them. kill off every “mercury” and call today’s lincolns “mercury”.
as far as this article is concerned… 4600lbs?!!? OH MY LORD. what an absolute PIG.
The crossover is the Enclave. Rumor has the Enclave gets a baby brother from the Caddy. I can not wait for the Invicta (please keep that name, not LaCrosse) comes out. You are right though MyWheelsOnWalss.com Ford really needs to get its act together.
Even though the next-generation SRX will be a Theta (front-drive bias) and not a Sigma, it looks to be the same size (some 194-195″ in length) as the outgoing model and perhaps a little taller, if the Saab 9-4 sibling is any indication, and the 300hp V6 will carry it well. It may, in USDM, have the CTS’s base 250+ hp V6 as it’s base mill.
Regarding the 9-4, the 284 hp V6 (maybe a turbo, being that’s a Saab staple) will be a nice fit, and I could see it offered in the soon-to-debut 9-5 sedan as an upgrade engine, it makes perfect sense. I drove a current 9-5 (which is an aged model) at a GM promo last year, and a turbo 4-banger only offered in it is certainly not enough for it’s class - it felt lumpy & buzzy and screamed economy rather than luxury.
Do hope they’ll keep that grille emblem:D
