The cat has been out of the proverbial bag on the Genesis coupe for quite some time now, complete with full high-res photographic evidence. However, despite the massive holes in the photo embargo, factual details of Hyundai’s new front-engine rear-drive coupe have been scarce. That has been remedied by the official reveal in New York this afternoon, and we have the full story.
Rumors of a V8-engined model have proven false. Instead, the expected 3.8L V6 and turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder are the sole offerings. Producing a Camaro-beating 310hp (on premium fuel) in V6 form, the Genesis coupe will be a serious contender in the performance coupe class. In four-pot form, however, the speculated turbo-four Camaro can breathe easier as the Hyundai only puts out 223hp (again on premium fuel). With a curb weight of just over 3,500lb (1590kg) the V6 coupe will have a power-to-weight ratio in a league with the Mustang GT and Nissan 350Z, although Hyundai likens the coupe to Infiniti’s considerably more luxurious G37. The turbocharged four weighs in about 100lbs less.
Transmission options include a six-speed manual or five-speed auto for the four-cylinder car, or a six-speed manual or six-speed auto for the V6 variant. Both cars get four-wheel disc brakes, and both have an optional four-piston Brembo package available, which ups the diameter from the standard 12.4-inch rear and 12.6-inch front to 13.0 and 13.6, respectively. Claimed top speed is 149mph for the V6 and 137mph for the four-cylinder.
Standard safety equipment includes anti-lock brakes, electronic brake distribution stability control and a full complement of front, side and curtain airbags.
The Genesis coupe is due to hit showroom floors in Q1 2009 as a 2010 model.
Hyundai Genesis Coupe leaks onto web

are thgey gonna try and drop the V8 from the Genesis sedan in it ?? if they are they could be onto a winner !
is this car supposed to be placed above the tiburon or replace the tiburon?
Exterior is attractive and interior, at a first glance, too. A lot of modern equipment is found in new Genesis Coupe. Start engine button, radio control on steering wheel, some chrome and steel accents, leather, digital a/c, trip computer… are awesome. But, there’s no Bluetooth connection, Homelink in the mirror, GPS and back-up camera. Probably, these options change the car theme from sport to luxurious, but if Hyundai wants to compete with brands like Infinity (G37) should bring the equipment, at least as an option. In my opinion, the car should have more luxurious equipment as his brother the Genesis sedan. Definitely, this car is proof of Hyundai’s evolution. Gorgeous!
its not a replacement for the tiburon. They plan to keep the tiburon. How do i know? my uncle works in the management in Korea but i live in the US.
How is this supposed to be exciting?
A V6 sports car from Japan. Ok.
Seriously different or retro styling? No.
Pavement ripping power? Not really.
C’mon, bring back something exciting like the Supra turbo targa.
I’m sure it’s a good car, but it’s not special. The GT-R is special, the 350z is differnt and exciting, the Evo is wild, this is boring, and 5-6 years after you buy it you’ll look in the garage and wonder why.
i guess exciting is a perspective, Gus. People have different tastes.
joe: i find it hard to believe that they would still offer the tiberon, but what ever.
as i said in my last post about this car (on the other thread), you’ve got young people like me who want a muscular agressive looking car, something that is styled strongly. I dont care about performance figures. if this thing beats out the mustang by 10 hp, big deal. i’ll still get the mustang cause it doesnt look like an old mans car.
but then you’ve got the older maybe more civilized guys who want a fun car. they could get the hyundai RWD “sport” car, or they could go get a real car. like the infinity that this is trying to copy.
sorry joe, i dont know you and i dont mean to give you a bad day, but the tiberon is the only car that hyundai has ever made that came from some original design. everything else is a copy. GENESIS was supposed to change all that but the genesis sedan is a cross between a mercedes and a bmw with a touch of lexus. this thing is all infinity. its disgusting.
most people dont buy cars for their stats. they buy them based on looks.
Its a great looking car but unfortunately it borrows to many styling cues from others. I can’t rally judge it until I see a price tag but I’m sue it will be priced below the competition, giving the 350z a run for its money. I don’t hate it but I don’t love it either. However I know it will probably do very well on the market. 310hp V6 is a nice little engine but I sure hope the have a supped up version in the making as well. give this thing 400hp and I might just visit the dealer.

First i’d like to say. Most of these ‘’Hyundai Haters'’ will never pass a spelling bee. Lol. And if you by a car based on looks. You’re just plain stupid. RESEARCH… Read motor trend, car & driver. Be a smart consumer, dont pre-judge a car by how it looks (tho u should like the car u buy) and all of you spelling bee flunkies, take a smart person with you to help you with those long big word contracts the salesguy is going to hit you with… Historically, even the best car manufacturers copy styles. The 86-91 mazda rx-7 was a Porsche 924/944 copy. In recent yrs., honda copied bmw. Just to name some major examples. Yet these cars are legendary. A 20k-30k copy of a 40k car is not so terrible, if you’re price limit is 30K. And until the car is tested and rated, you can’t say another brand is better. All u can basically say, is it ugly or not. And on paper coupe kills almost any american car up 2 42k and any jap ride to 35K. Maybe a small handful can somewhat compete in performance. Maybe? So u r saving between 5 and 12k on a virtually equal or better equipped vehicle that possibly may match there performance. So all you inbred hillbilly mustang camaro lovers relax. And dont hate people just because they choose performance and quality over jus looking good and rumbling down the road with there sister in the passenger seat, who also doubles as ‘’baby mama.'’ Lol and P.S. I own a gm. 07 Monte carlo ss! Its powerful but handles like Shit. My old 93 rx-7, would destroy it in every aspect. I’m going back to asian and i’m considering a genesis.
