Right-hand drive Camaro confirmed for Europe

The shift to small, economical cars isn't the only thing going on in General Motors' product development pipeline, despite what all the headlines may say. The Camaro is coming, and now it's confirmed to be coming to Europe as well, with a right-hand drive conversion going to the UK. About 600 cars - half convertibles, half hardtops - are set to make the switch.

The UK Camaro will be priced above its Zeta-platform cousin, the Vauxhall VXR8, when it arrives on British shores in the first part of 2010. The translation to RHD won't harm the car's power, as the models expected to be brought in to the UK are of the 400hp, 6.0L V8 variety, reports Autocar. So far there has been no talk of the V6 and rumored turbo four-cylinder making the trip across the Atlantic. What will be making the trip intact, however, is the Chevrolet nameplate.

Original plans to bring the Camaro to Europe had shied away from using the Chevrolet brand for the car, since it is more strongly associated with budget cars in the UK than it is in the U.S. That's changed, however, as GM has decided to expand its Chevrolet brand in the UK, doubling its models there by 2012.

  I'm surprised there is enough of a market in a country with sky high fuel prices and cameras at every corner for a RHD vehicle from America with a huge, thirsty V8.

  agreed Gus...expect a big fail..although they will of course all get purchased at a premium and then get locked up for fear of scratches and damage and wastage of fuel.

  wizard, that is pretty much what will happen to this car. it's going to be some one's sunday cruiser. and when you consider just how much power you get, for the price they're asking.. and with all of that heritage? it will sell. The mustang sells in the UK, not overly well though, because it isnt a RHD car.
  
  Lets put it this way: The Holden Manaro sells in europe, and its the same car. this thing looks SO cool, and has so much heritage, not only will it be fast and cheap, it will turn heads like the holden could only dream of.
  
  And you can take the 10k pounds that you didnt spend on a comparable merc or BMW, and buy years and years worth of petrol for it.
  
  Just like gus says,.. you don't notice poor mileage on a car that gets driven once a week.
