Seat’s new Ibiza hatch is set for launch later this year yet the only model we’ve seen so far is the regular five-door. As was the case with previous generations of the Ibiza, Seat will likely offer a number of different variants including a performance model based on the Bocanegra Concept, an entry-level three-door hatch, a coupe, an estate wagon, and a possible convertible.

We now have renderings of two of these new models: the three-door hatch and the convertible. As expected, the three-door hatch will essentially be a shortened version of the five-door model revealed last month. For the convertible, engineers would need to change the side profile and glasshouse but the car’s front-end styling will be identical to the hatch models.

The engine line-up for both cars will be the same as the five-door hatch, which means three different petrol engine options ranging from 1.2 to 1.6L in displacement and developing between 70 and 102hp. The line-up of direct-injection TDI engines is expected to be revealed later in the year.

Earlier this month, reports emerged claiming Seat will build a production version of the Bocanegra Concept as the new Ibiza Cupra. Power for the car will come from a twin-turbo 1.4L petrol engine with 180hp. Expect to see the new Cupra as well as several other Ibiza variants at the Paris Motor Show in October.

Good looking little car, but what’s a Seat? Are they part of Volkswagen or something?

rn, you’re right, in the end, SEAT is a cheap VW made in east europe. but audi doesnt share much with VW.. its like the caddy of the vw empire. caddy may be owned with GM but it isnt sharing any of its platforms.

SEAT cars are made in east europe??????. Spain is in east europe????. I’m spanish, I live in east europe????….my god I was thinking that I lived in mediterranean europe, and i live in the east of the continent. SEAT IS A SPANISH BRAND INSIDE VW GROUP.

Cesar you beat me to it. All SEATs are made either in Spain (primarily) or Portugal. Expanding on the east europe dig, I just want to point out that both Audi and VW have production facilities in eastern europe. Also, Audi and VW share platforms, drive lines, and electronic components. Visually, they look distinctly different, but under the skin there is still quite a bit of similarity.

Chris probably confused Seat with Skoda, both brands belong to the Volkswagen Group (as well as Audi, Bugatti, Bentley and Lamborghini), offer cars with (almost) VW quality for lower prices. Skoda is from the Czech Republic, Seat from Spain.

vb, thank you.. excuse me gentlemen.. HUGE mix up there. but you have to realize, as a canadian I’ve never seen either of these makes before. ever.

as per the VW versus audi, I realize that components are shared, facilities are shared, etc.. but jaguars had interior components that were used in the fiesta. the mazda 6 and ford mustang are built in the same factory. yes I realize that VW and Audi share some engines, but again, the same can be said of caddy and chevy..

basically VW and audi arent like ford and lincoln. they arent reskinned, rebadged copies. dont get me wrong, I’d love a lincoln and would definitely pay a premium for a car that is not much more than a ford, but in the end, its got a lesser equivalent in another company.

I think the only case of that happening in VW and audi is with the Q7 and what ever VW.

realize the term “platform” is a really interesting term in that two vehicles could share platforms but not share a single component. the focus, mazda 3, and volvo s40 are all on the same platform but i would guess there are only about 20% of the components in any of those cars that are found in all 3.

Yeah, Chris, you really stepped in it. It’s very popular right now to make fun of Americans, but woe is you if you mix up eastern and western Europe… :)

Well I have to say you are all wrong! I have worked for VW/AUDI for almost 35 years now, working my way up the ladder to management. To put the record straight, VW and AUDI are now the same company. Yes they share platforms etc, but have different ideas for their cars, which makes them unique or there wouldnt be much point in having two makes! Also the VW/AUDI group, as they were once called, bought SEAT and SKODA. VW took on SKODA to adapt etc and AUDI took on seat. All of the cars share the same engines, platforms, running gear, electrics, etc etc etc., the only difference being is that each model will get treated differently. By that I mean that AUDI will fit their TDI 2.0 at the standard 138 bhp, where seat tuned theirs to 170 bhp to fit it to their fabulous LEON FR. So to summarise, all the cars are the same under the skin unless they are tweaked!
Hope this helps you all in your discussion.
