Ford’s iconic Mustang is only due for an update next year but it appears developers will be completely revising the powertrain lineup in addition to tweaking the car’s sheet metal. Fears of impending CAFE regulations has got Ford management worried, so much so that officials are considering speeding up the introduction of more fuel-efficient engines, namely the new twin turbo EcoBoost V6.
The V8 lineup is also tipped to receive an overhaul. MotorTrend is reporting that 2010 Mustangs could be available with a new 5.0L SOHC V8 in replacement of the previous 4.6L unit. This new 5.0L unit could also eventually spawn a modern version of the original Boss 302 in a limited edition Mustang GT with power up around the 350hp level. A smaller 4.6L V8 should also be available. This will be the same unit as found in the current Bullitt-edition cars. Developed using parts from Ford Racing Technology, the Bullitt version features a 315hp 4.6L V8 engine with 440Nm (325lb-ft) of torque.
The 4.0L V6 will still be available in base versions. If offered, the EcoBoost V6 model will cost similar to the V8 versions and will output similar power and torque figures. Ford claims the new EcoBoost six-cylinder can churn out up to 415hp and has the same torque levels of a big-cube V8.
As for the high-performance Shelby models, the source claims the GT500 will continue in the 2010 model year and it will retain its 500hp 5.4L supercharged V8. Ford, meanwhile, has also been testing supercharged versions of its own 5.0L V8 and is rumored to be developing its own flagship to compete with cars like the new Corvette ZR1 and Viper SRT10.

DUMP THE 4L FOR GOD’S SAKE! the 4L can be replaced with the duratec 35 and the 4.6L would be OBLITERATED by the ecoboost 35.
yeah, the 5L coming back would be awesome……. in a very limited run.

Maybe too many?
How about replacing the 4.0 with a turbo V6, using a 5.0, and then a super 5.0?
If Ford can make 400 HP from a turbo V6 then they should be able to make over 500 HP from the new 5.0. Long live the 5.0!
Dump the 4.0L V6. Put the 3.5 or 3.7L Duratec V6 in the Pony car.
Hurry up the introduction of the 5.0L OHC motor too.
Make 6spd manuals standard and 5/6 spd automatics available.

base 3.7L V6,
GT 5.0L V8 / 3.7TT,
Shelby 5.0L S/C
The straight six in the Australian Falcon is unique and is being axed for the Duratec V6s.
The NA 4.0L Straight 6 in the Falcon has 195kw (260hp) and 393Nm (300ft.lbs).
The “XR6T” turbo 4.0L Straight 6 in the Falcon has 270kw (360hp) and 533Nm (400ft.lbs).
The “F6″ turbo 4.0L Straight 6 in the Falcon has 300kw (400hp) and 600Nm (450ft.lbs).
The V8 uses a 3V 5.4L engine as the base, then has Ford DOHC heads added.
The XR8 5.4L DOHC in the Falcon has 290kw (383hp) and 520Nm (390ft.lbs)
The GT 5.4L DOHC in the Falcon has 320kw (400hp) and 550Nm (412ft.lbs).
So maybe Ford Aus should do the drivetrain engineering too!

XR6T by motoring journo’s did a 0-100kmh in 5.1 so the f6 looks like it will do sub 5s
Nothing wrong with the 6 cyl 4.0L Very adequate torque and power. The 3.5 L fans should remember the power band is in high rpms whereas the 4.0L achieves its power down low; 265 hp sounds good on paper but likely isn’t cutting it in in the Ford tests or else you would have seen it in the Mustang by now and certtianly by 2010. Besides who wants a high reving Jap like motor in a north American car? As for the ecoboost….open your wallets wide; although based on the 3.5 it won’t be cheap to buy or to service…..If you need that much power, get the V8, and compensate.
