Mitsubishi will unveil a new compact crossover concept at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show in order to gauge public interest ahead of a possible introduction of a production version. According to reports, Mitsubishi is yet to give the green light for the project but if interest levels are high we could see the new crossover model in showrooms by as early as 2009.

In recent years Mitsubishi has reduced the number of its vehicle architectures from 14 to just six, but at the same time it has steadily been increasing the number of cars it builds on those platforms. According to Dutch publication Auto Vision, Mitsubishi bosses want to develop more than 20 new cars based on its six platforms within the next couple of years.

The new small crossover will be styled similarly to the Dakar rally racer and will be positioned below the current Overlander SUV (pictured).

“Below the current Overlander” means like a Qashqai or like a Sedici?
