About 120 BMWs were damaged on Sunday when a train they were being transported on derailed near Blair, South Carolina.

Fortunately there were no injuries to staff onboard the train.

The same can’t be said for many of the vehicles, which included X3, X4, X5 and X6 SUVs, many of which are likely to be written off. Photos of the wreck can be seen at WIS.

The vehicles had just left BMW’s plant in nearby Spartanburg and were en route to the Port of Charleston.

The cause of the derailment is still being investigated. It occurred on Sunday afternoon and saw 12 rail cars run off the tracks. It could have been much worse as there were 96 rail cars in total with each carrying approximately 10 vehicles.

The case reminds us of an accident in 2006 where a cargo ship fell on its side destroying almost 5,000 Mazda vehicles it was carrying.
