Ram has a new 1500 pickup truck for you. Well, it's not completely new, but it's a new trim and there are parts of it we like and parts we could do without. So basically, it's like every special edition truck ever. This one is the 2017 Ram Night Package and the key design upgrade that ties it all together are the many blacked-out bits.

The Night Package starts as a Ram Sport before it gets the dark trim treatment. If you check the Night Package box, you'll get a black grille, black "RAM" lettering on the tailgate, a black Ram's head grille badge, flat-black door badging, and glossy black 20-inch wheels. Those wheels come wrapped in 275-size tires with black and white lettering.

Ram will sell you a Night Package 1500 in regular, quad, and crew cab variants. You can have either the 3.6-liter V-6 or 5.7-liter V-8 under the hood, and you can also get two- or four-wheel drive and a long or short bed.

The good? Some of the black trim really works well and pops against any contrasting exterior paint scheme. The not-so-good? Those tires would actually look a lot cooler if they left the full white lettering in place. The bad? That grille looks a bit awkward with the hex-pattern inserts. It's too much black in that space. Maybe a blend of glossy outer grille trim with a flat black inner trim would help?

Regardless, it's a cool looking factory-built truck that shouldn't be priced too highly over the standard Ram Sport model.
