It's a known--yet sad--fact that the manual transmission is slowly dying. One could argue the reasons, but it's happening. Interestingly, according to our recent Twittter poll, you still want to #GiveAShift with three pedals.

In a Twitter poll we ran asking which type of transmission would you opt for, a whopping 58 percent of you said you prefer a manual transmission. Clearly some of you understand the benefits of a dual-clutch transmission as 31 percent of you chose it over a manual.

Perhaps most interesting is that 8 percent of you said you want a torque converter automatic transmission and 3 percent of you want a CVT.

While most CVTs aren't really great for performance, there's a reason for that. In fact, CVTs could be terrific, if they were designed to be so, and people understood them more as laid out by our friend Jason Fenske from Engineering Explained.

There's nothing inherently wrong with a torque converter automatic transmission. In fact, the one in the current Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is not only fantastic, but it's about as fast as Porsche's PDK dual-clutch transmission according to GM, and we have little reason to doubt it based on our experience.

Dual-clutch units are terrific for track days. It doesn't matter who you are, you can't shift faster with three pedals than you can with a dual-clutch unit. If it's about lap times, this is a good way to go.

All the same, when it comes down to smiles per mile, there's simply no way to beat a good, old-fashioned manual transmission.

We #GiveAShift, and clearly you do, too, if our recent poll is any indicator.
