You know Hot Wheels for its scaled-down versions of your favorite machines.

Of course, it also makes machines straight out of your wildest dreams. Usually its crafted in 1:64 scale, but occasionally things get sized up.

This is such an occasion as Hot Wheels is preparing a new line of vehicles it's calling Carships. To kick off the scale space action, the toy builder has created a life-size example that could've come from a galaxy far, far away.

This is the X-Wing Fighter reimagined as a car. If you're in San Diego, you might just catch a glimpse of it too as it's set to prowl the grounds of Comic Con this year. R2 isn't helping to control the action on this version. Instead, power is provided by a 2.0-liter engine, the brakes are AP Racing units, and the rubber is a set of custom slicks. All of that means this is most likely a blast to drive. Even if it were slow, it would still be awesome because it's a road going X-Wing for crying out loud.

We're told that all of that body cladding actually creates functional downforce. If you're in this car and running at 165 mph, you'll see 950 pounds of downforce. That is a bold claim, but we'll just politely nod and smile whenever Hot Wheels talks to us.
