It’s no secret that one of the great keys to speed is lightness, and the Miata has that in spades—even when converted to electric drive as the drag monster in this video is. So it’s perhaps no surprise the Miata demolishes the Tesla Model S on the drag strip. But it’s still fun to watch.

Of course, the Miata also has the advantage of full drag-race prep and some huge, sticky rear tires, too. The Model S, on the other hand, while an 85 kW Performance model, is a full production street car, putting it at a marked disadvantage.
Still, seeing an electric Miata run 9.27 at 142 mph in the quarter-mile is impressive, and serves as an apt reminder that the future of motorsports might be electric, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be boring.
