The Tesla Model S is, undeniably, the best electric car to date. It has also been the subject of some fear-mongering about fire. But looking at the scenes of destruction from a police chase of a stolen Tesla Model S in West Hollywood last night (video below), it’s hard to imagine any car that could stand up to the forces involved.

A debris field covered North La Brea Avenue in the wee hours of the morning of July 4, with at least four people taken to the hospital and multiple vehicles destroyed or damaged. The stolen Tesla Model S involved in the pursuit smashed into a synagogue and split in two and caught fire, as well.

The driver of the stolen Model S was taken to the hospital in critical condition after being ejected from the car. Five occupants in one of the vehicles struck by the Model S were injured, leaving two in serious condition and one in critical condition.

According to NBC Los Angeles, investigators think the Tesla was traveling at more than 100 mph when the crash occurred. When the Model S split in half, the rear portion was lodged in the synagogue’s entrance way, while the front half found its way into the street, where it caught fire.
