McLaren is reportedly working on a new supercar to fill the void in its lineup between the 12C and the million-dollar-plus P1. Such positioning would put the new McLaren, code-named the P15, up against the likes of the Ferrari [NYSE:RACE] F12 Berlinetta and Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4.

News of the P15’s existence was confirmed to Autocar by McLaren Automotive boss Mike Flewitt. He is reported to have said the car will feature a carbon fiber monocoque chassis and mid-mounted twin-turbo V-8, and is still quite some time away from launch.

Flewitt’s description of the car suggests McLaren is likely to once again utilize its flexible MonoCell carbon tub found in the 12C and the P1. The engine, too, sounds like it will be a version of the Ricardo-sourced twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-8 found in those same models. How this will sit with supercar buyers remains to be seen, though it didn’t hamper sales of the P1, all 375 of which were sold before production of the car had even started.

Before the arrival of the P15, McLaren will launch some additional models. Later this year we’re expecting to see a hardcore version of the 12C designed to take on Ferrari’s 458 Speciale, and in 2015 we should see McLaren launch an all-new car, an entry-level model which goes by the internal code P13. The P13 will target the likes of the Ferrari California and high-end Porsche 911 variants, and yes, it too will feature McLaren’s MonoCell carbon tub and the Ricardo-sourced twin-turbo V-8.

Interestingly, Flewitt is also said to have mentioned a P1 successor in his interview with Autocar, allegedly explaining that it would only arrive after battery and electric drive systems have taken significant leaps forward.
