BMW's smallest crossover will show off a host of updates at January's 2014 Detroit Auto Show--perhaps the last such updates before an entirely new model goes on sale in 2016.

The 2015 BMW X1 will gain new exterior accents, some refinements to the interior and equipment updates to maintain its popularity for the coming year. These start with a set of new air intake vents in the front apron, a new design of 17-inch alloy wheel with a V-spoke design, and standard daytime running lights. BMW has also seen fit to offer a new shade of Sparkling Brown metallic paint to the exterior color chart.

Inside, the changes are more numerous. Buyers who opt for the xLine, Sport Line or M Sport packages get to enjoy a new soft-touch surface on the instrument cluster visor with "lapfolded seams to add to the premium elegance". BMW has tweaked the interior trim materials while also offering new trim accents in gloss black, matte Coral Red or pearl-gloss Chrome, depending on your preference. The bottom of the tailgate edge gets a new stainless steel finisher.

As ever with a modern BMW, ConnectedDrive infotainment services make up the bulk of the updates. From spring 2014, owners will have an expanded range of features when they order an X1 with the navigation system and Connected Drive Services. Drivers can subscribe to these app-based services, including Online Entertainment and an ECO PRO Analyser to monitor just how efficient (or otherwise) your driving is. All services will be compatible with both Apple iPhone and Android devices, so should cover a wide range of users.

Joining the updated X1 at the North American International Auto Show, BMW has also unveiled a 'Pure Fasion Design' equipment package for its Z4 sports car. This features a new, more luxurious interior trim and another appearance of the new Sparkling Brown metallic paint finish. Both the X1 and Z4 will continue with the same drivetrain options as before. More exciting than either of these though will be your first chance to see BMW's 2015 M3 sedan and M4 coupe, the new 2-Series coupe, and further production appearances of the i3 electric car and i8 plug-in sports car.
