The Volkswagen Touareg SUV has been in production for more than 10 years now, and to celebrate the German automaker launched a special edition ‘Touareg X’ at the Paris Auto Show last year. This special edition Touareg X has finally landed in the U.S., and is priced from $56,170.

Only 1,000 examples will be built, all of them based on the Touareg TDI in Lux trim. Compared to a standard Touareg TDI Lux, the special edition gets a number of unique exterior and interior features.

The exterior is decked out in Moonlight Blue Pearl paint and features 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels, LED tail-lights and special Touareg X badging. Inside, the Touareg’s premium interior is made even lusher with Vienna leather trim, ebony wood accents, a piano black center console and aluminum trim on the door sills, pedals and dash.

As with all TDI Lux models, the Touareg X is powered by a turbocharged and direct-injected 3.0-liter V-6 diesel engine. Output remains capped at 240 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, with drive sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic and 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system. VW estimates that fuel economy can get as high as 29 mpg on the highway.

Standard equipment includes a panoramic powered sunroof, keyless ignition, bi-xenon headlights, satellite navigation and 8-inch touchscreen display, a reversing camera, power adjustable seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Since production of the Touareg started in 2002, the nameplate has entered its second generation and more than 700,000 examples built. Of these, 121,385, or roughly 17 percent, have ended up in the U.S.
