It's not really a race. Instead, Red Bull Racing Australia decided to run one of its acrobatic planes against a V8 Supercar. Why? Because it's fun, and it looks pretty awesome on video.

The V8 Supercar is piloted by Jamie Whincup, who has run his racecars to four V8 Supercar championships. With just three events to go in 2013, Whincup could be looking at his fifth series win. The man quite literally piloting the plane is Joel Haski, and he's clearly not scared to bring his machine in close to the sand.

When we say close, we mean close. It appears that the wings of the Red Bull stunt plane would be knocking out tourists if the Gold Coast beach weren't shut down for this run. It's an impressive bit of flying, but we're also rather impressed with Whincup's wheel skills. His V8 Supercar doesn't seem to enjoy the sandy surface and the car is fighting for traction during most of the run. As he comes up to speed, the car weaves back and forth across the sand and Whincup is clearly working hard in the cabin to keep the car moving straight.

Sure, nothing much was accomplished with this video. That doesn't mean we can't enjoy it. It's a fun bit of marketing ahead of the Gold Coast race of the 2013 V8 Supercars season. Plane versus car is almost always fun to watch, and this video from Red Bull is no exception.
