World's First 'One-Piece' Carbon Fiber Wheels Now Available In U.S.

A few weeks back we told you about the revolutionary one-piece carbon fiber wheels developed by Australia’s Carbon Revolution. Built first for the Porsche 911, the 19x8.5 (front) and 19x12 (rear) wheels save some ten pounds of unsprung weight per corner, delivering noticeable gains in acceleration, cornering and fuel economy.

Carbon Revolution claims the wheels reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), too, since the carbon fiber material has natural damping properties. If there’s a downside, it’s  the cost of a set of four, estimated to be $15,000. Like the saying goes, “speed costs money, so how fast do you want to spend?”

If shaving tenths of a second off your lap time is how you prefer to spend weekends, the wheels may see like a reasonable performance upgrade. As for strength, the manufacturer claims its carbon fiber wheels are durable, impact resistant and have a life expectancy comparable to aluminum wheels. They’re SAE and TUV approved, too.

Carbon Revolution’s CR-9 wheels are now available from three U.S. distributors, including BBI Autosport in Huntington Beach, California; RSTRADA Limited, in Los Angeles, California, and Wheel Warehouse, located in Anaheim California.

The CR-9 wheels are currently manufactured for the Porsche 911, the Lamborghini Gallardo and the Audi R8, but Carbon Revolution promises more fitments (starting with the BMW M3) in the near future.

As for the price, the labor-intensive process of creating the wheels is likely to keep it high for the time being. Carbon Revolution will soon be able to produce between 3,000 and 6,000 wheels per year, but the long-term plan is to build 250,000 units annually via process automation.
