Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall on certain versions of its 2012 E Class Coupe due to a potential fault with an airbag fitted to the cars.

The recall affects all E350 and E550 coupe models manufactured from April 2, 2012, through June 29, 2012. Note, owners of E Class sedans and convertibles are not affected.

In total there are some 499 vehicles in the U.S. affected by the latest recall.

According to the automaker, improper stitching of the window curtain air bag on the passenger side may cause it to not deploy as intended in the affected vehicles. This improper stitching could cause the bag to deflate more quickly than intended in the case of a crash, reducing the protection it may provide and thus increasing the risk of injury to vehicle occupants.

Owners of the affected vehicles will be contacted by Mercedes-Benz shortly, and will be requested to take their vehicles to their nearest Mercedes-Benz dealership, which will replace the faulty air bag free of charge. For further information you can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 1-888-327-4236 (reference recall campaign number 12V492000) or Mercedes-Benz at 1-800-367-6372.
