Actor, race car driver, super nice guy - is there anything Patrick Dempsey can't do?
Haven't found anything yet…
Last week, prior to his two-car team's competing in the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series race at soggy Homestead-Miami Speedway in a brace of Mazda RX-8 GT cars, Dempsey rescued a 17-year-old boy from a flipped Ford Mustang.
Weston Massett was driving his Mustang on a Malibu canyon road near Dempsey's house; Dempsey heard the noise when the driver lost control on the winding road and flipped his car several times, ran from his home, crowbar in hand to pry the doors open and a fire extinguisher put out any possible flames
While I'm not sure if they teach that in driving school for preparatory race car drivers, Dempsey had his wits sufficiently about him to carefully remove young Massett from his car and stayed with the victim until paramedics arrived at the scene. He was joined by wife Jillian and three neighbors, who watched as the teen was airlifted to a nearby hospital.
Massett was semi-conscious during the ensuing ordeal but recognized the Grey's Anatomy actor and race team owner. When he opened his eyes and saw Dempsey he asked, "Are you famous?" Dempsey replied with all the coolness of the character he plays on television, "I'm a doctor."
Keeping in character Dempsey called the young man's mother and told her about her son's situation. She asked if he was a paramedic and he said, "No, this is Patrick Dempsey." Her response: "McDreamy!"
Massett suffered no serious injuries other than a concussion and a stretched optic nerve; his passenger was unharmed in the incident.
Dempsey, 46, who raced a Ferrari in the 24 Hours of Le Mans three years ago is preparing to return to The Sarthe circuit in 2013 with his own LMP2 team. Good to know if he comes upon an incident on the long, 8-plus-mile French circuit that he'll be able to render the kind of TLC he performed for a young man in over his head on a canyon road in Malibu.
