With less than four hours remaining in the 50th anniversary Rolex 24 at Daytona, this looks to be a Daytona Prototype battle between the reigning champions and defending winners of this race, the No. 01 TELMEX BMW/Riley of Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates and one of three Ford/Riley DP racecars (the No. 60 and No. 6 from MIchael Shank Racing and the No. 8 of Starworks Motorsports).
It's still too close to call.
There's been plenty of rubbin' to go with the racin' here at Daytona International Raceway.
Apparently any problems that Ganassi's lead team had, which included an engine failure due to a faulty valve spring in final practice prior to Thursday qualifying, were all they wrote as the car's been running like a top, thanks to mostly careful driving by Scott Pruett, Memo Rojas, Joey Hand and Graham Rahal.
Another car that's run like clockwork is the No. 59 Brumos
Porsche GT3 Cup GT leader, with Americans Leh Keen, Andrew Davis, Hurley Haywood (celebrating his 40th year at this race) and German Marc Lieb. After 20 hours they were maintaining a good, 12-second lead over the similar No. 67 Porsche car of TRG, continuing to cycle back to the front with each pit stop.
At this point there are 632 laps in the books, the sun is shining, the crowd is awakening after the usual rowdy night and watching the heated competition (and each other). Crew members look like they haven't slept in two days (likely the truth) and still, the cars continue to make their way around this 3.560-mile road course that incorporates part of the NASCAR oval.
SpeedTV has live coverage of the race that continues through to 4PM EST. Watch and see the (bound-to-be) exciting finish!
