The eagerly-anticipated 2012 Volkswagen Golf R is finally beginning to trickle into dealer showrooms. Packing a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder good for 256 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque, the Golf R also boasts 4Motion all-wheel-drive, a six-speed manual transmission and a nicely appointed interior.

It also boasts a starting price tag of over $34,000, which puts it beyond the reach of many Volkswagen brand loyalists. If you find yourself in this group, take heart: a new iPad app called “Golf R Drivers Forever” celebrates all things Golf, and the best part is that it’s free.

Downloading the app gets you exclusive videos and photos, including a brief documentary on the “world of Volkswagen,” produced by AWOL Films. There’s an interview with Chip Foose, who professes his love for both the Golf and the VW brand, and plenty of stories from Volkswagen fans.

There’s even an interactive timeline covering the history of the Golf, which broadens the app’s appeal beyond those just interested in the Golf R. If you’re in the market to buy a Golf R, however, the app also includes a digital copy of the brochure and gives a 360-degree view of the car.

If you’re a fan of the Volkswagen Golf in any form, we say the app is worth a look. It’s in the app store now, but (sadly) isn’t available in an iPhone version.
