The information was revealed to Autoblog by Hyundai spokesperson Jim Trainor. He explained that the move will allow Hyundai to position the Genesis Coupe further upmarket.
“The 2.0-liter turbo engine will be discontinued starting with the 2015 model year, allowing us to reposition Genesis Coupe with its more premium performance buyer," Trainor said.
The comments suggest Hyundai is paving the way for a much more upmarket second-generation Genesis Coupe, previewed last year by the stunning HND-9 coupe concept. The new model is expected to be introduced for the 2016 model year and share its platform and technology with the 2015 Genesis sedan. To fill the void of the four-cylinder Genesis Coupe, we’re likely to see a more potent Veloster Turbo, something hinted at by Hyundai just this week in the form of the Veloster Midship concept.
Other changes for the Genesis Coupe’s 2015 model year should be the launch of a new base model, which will be followed by the existing R-Spec and Ultimate trim levels. The Grand Touring trim is expected to be dropped.
Sales of the 2015 Hyundai Genesis Coupe should commence this fall.
