Audi's Next RS4: To Be Or Not To Be?

This much is clear: Audi will build a new, B8 version of the RS4, unless it doesn’t. It will come in both sedan and wagon (or “Avant,” in Audi-speak) forms, unless Audi decides to launch it in wagon form only.

Confused yet? So are sites across the internet, which are reporting conflicting information about the next generation of Audi’s fastest A4.  Pistonheads says that the B8 RS4 has been scrapped so that Audi can accelerate the launch of the next RS6.

There’s also concern that the next RS4, with its rumored 450 horsepower V-8 (shared with the RS5), would be too close in performance to the next RS6 uber-sedan, which may shift buyers away from the higher-margin car.

The counterpoint to this argument comes from Autoblog.nl, whose sources at Audi confirm that the RS4 Avant will hit Audi dealers in Europe in the third quarter of 2012. As for the RS4 sedan, Autoblog.nl quotes Audi as saying “do not assume” that the car will see production.

What’s our takeaway from this? It sounds like the RS4 Avant is a go, but it’s likely to be a Europe-only model. It’s doubtful that we’ll see an RS4 sedan, but it’s worth remembering that the same was said about the B7 version of the RS4 sedan, too.

Neither the RS4 Avant nor the RS4 sedan (if one is built) are likely to make it to this side of the pond. Until the anticipated launch of the RS5 this fall, our only RS option on these shores the TT-RS coupe.
