Cousin Carl Edwards got "the gift" of pole position for Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Ford 400 on the 1.5-mile Homestead-Miami Speedway oval, while his competitor Tony Stewart starts 15th. "We just wanted to start in front of Tony somewhere," he said. Always a fierce competitor on the Homestead track - as is Stewart… both drivers have two wins here - Edwards was quickest in the second practice after being second-quick in the first.
Practice had been delayed by one day after persistent rain kept the NASCAR Sprint Car cars in the garage.
Martin Truex Jr starts alongside Edwards, while Kasey Kahne and Kurt Busch own the second row. Nationwide Series polesitter Brad Keselowski earned the fifth starting slot with Matt Kenseth sixth. Jeff Gordon, Greg Biffle, Jimmie Johnson and Denny Hamlin round out the top 10 drivers in this season finale.
There are three Ford Fusion race cars in the top ten, three Toyota Camrys, the only two Dodge runners and three Chevrolet drivers.
Stewart is excited about contending for a third title. "I'm not normally known as being much of a qualifier so 15th I'm pretty content with right now. We spent a lot of time working on the race set-up this morning," Stewart said.
Edwards spent the two practices working on qualifying, which paid off for him. "They're either going to look like geniuses doing that or not," Stewart remarked after learning of Edwards' approach to the practice sessions.
The big advantage for Edwards is the first pit stall, while Stewart is further back on the list, albeit close to an opening in the pit road. "It's really neat to be part of a battle like this," Edwards noted. "It's great to be on pole but it is just one lap and tomorrow we have 267 laps - and we have some serious competition out there. We were just going to put this Ford Fusion up there and get a good pit stall and race hard all day Sunday," he said.
