Classic car auctions are all about scoring that rare find, and in the case of the upcoming auction at Monterey, California, in August, there will be at least one super-rare classic on the block.

The car in question is a 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Spezial Roadster. Originally sold for $12,000 when new, RM Auctions is now expecting the car to command a world-record setting price for a Mercedes at auction.

Just 406 540Ks were built during the original production run between 1936 and 1939, and this may be one of only three surviving units.

A similar car that belonged to Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone brought in $8,252,201 at auction in October 2007.

Most recently, the car was seen in New York City as part of a star-studded opening for the new M-B dealership in Manhattan.

The Monterey Auction takes place August 19 and 20 in Monterey, California, the week of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and its related events.
