About a month ago, three men from Poland managed to steal a trio of exotic cars, a BMW 7-Series, a Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano and a one-off Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Sang Bleu--yes, the special edition model built to celebrate Bugatti’s centenary back in 2009.

The brazen--or should we say stupid--thieves then attempted to drive the cars from where they were stolen during a home invasion in Oberrieden, Switzerland to Poland--via Germany.

Clearly, the cars stood out on the German autobahns and police quickly apprehended two of the thieves. Sadly, not before the driver of the Veyron scraped the side of a guard rail. The third one, driving the Ferrari 599, was smart enough to dump the car at a train station in the German town of Fürth and is still on the run.

Turns out the apprehended men will be facing more charges than they would have originally thought. They have been handed a tax bill of around $522,000 since the stolen cars were registered in Switzerland, which is not part of the European Union.

Smugglers trying to bring stolen goods into Germany, which is part of the EU, are faced with a 10 percent tariff and 19 percent import tax, which you can imagine on a one-off Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport and a BMW 7-Series is not going to be an insignificant amount.
