2012 Audi S7 Sportback spy shots

Audi is currently working on two new high-performance versions of its recently revealed 2012 A6 and just launched 2012 A7, spy shots of which you can view by clicking here and here.

The cars are the sportier ‘S’ variants of the luxury sedan and sportback and in the U.S. they are expected to feature a brand new twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 developing well in excess of 400 horsepower. However, in fuel conscious Europe, the new cars are expected to offer high-performance diesel powertrains as an additional option.

The advantages of modern diesels are well known, namely, their high-torque characteristics and low fuel consumption. But sadly, in the U.S., a lack of fuel stations that supply diesel as well as a stigma towards the alternative fuel has kept its popularity low.

According to a new report, both the upcoming Audi S6 and S7 will feature an uprated version of the automaker’s existing 3.0-liter turbodiesel in Europe, delivering some 300 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. Importantly, these would be the first Audi S models fitted with a diesel powertrain and the first with more than one engine option.

This marks a major step in a new direction for Audi and for luxury automakers in general but the move is not all that surprising. Audi already offers a turbodiesel engine in its TT sports car overseas and the automaker has consistently achieved winning results with its range of TDI diesel powered Le Mans race cars over the years.
