As if to prove the apparently limitless potential of its flat six engine, Porsche has announced a 4.0-liter version of the powerplant for the 911 GT3 RS 4.0. And while the arrival at 4.0-liters represents only .2 of a liter of bump from the previous 3.8 it is a significant one nonetheless.

To spin out a solid 125 horsepower per liter, the 4.0 requires titanium connecting rods, forged pistons and a crankshaft developed for racing in the 911 GT3 RSR. The engine winds to 8,250 rpm and generates 339 ft-lbs of torque at 5,750 rpm. A six-speed manual conducts all that output to the rear wheels enabling the 911 GT3 RS 4.0 to be capable of lapping the Nordschliefe circuit of the Nurburgring in 7:27. It’s a 3.8 second car to 60 and will reach 120 in around 10 seconds. Top is quoted at 193 miles per hour.

The car this engine is mounted in is pretty desirable as well. Topped up on fluids, the coupe weighs in at 2,998 pounds. To skinny this version of the 911 down, Porsche's engineers specified carbon fiber for the seat frames, fenders and cargo compartment lid. Even the carpeting is lightweight.

Like every GT3 before this one, a large fixed rear wing dominates the design. The RS 4.0 also gets the air deflection vanes you see mounted on the car in the image above in order to create downforce on both ends of the car. The GT3 4.0 enjoys a total of 426 lbs of downforce at its top speed. Readily recognizable, the Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 will come in but one color, Carrara White. Of course sightings might be rare, as Porsche plans to build only 600 examples of the 4.0-liter GT3 for worldwide distribution. This means we’ll probably see 60 or so examples of the Porsche shipped to the United States at best.

That said, if this is the one you’ve been waiting for, you might want to forward a financial instrument for $185,000 to your favorite Porsche dealer—pronto. U.S. deliveries are slated for the latter part of 2011.
